The Hartford's Complex Liability Solutions team is a dedicated group of underwriters, risk engineering consultants and liability claims specialists experienced in hard-to-place products and premises risks. We face catastrophic exposures in our high-hazard book every day. We are seeking a Complex and Loss Sensitive General Liability Underwriter to join our team in Chicago.

Responsibilities include providing technical underwriting expertise in the risk selection, pricing, administration and account management of the Complex Liability Solutions book of business, profitably underwrite new and renewal high hazard driven business that requires strong exposure and control evaluation skills, identify appropriate opportunities consistent with risk appetite, and develop strong agency relationships. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Creates, drives and executes on strategies for new and renewal accounts

  • Effectively provides excellent account management service of an assigned territory through strategic planning and operational excellence.

  • Ability to tailor a service plan for each client based on their individual needs

  • Takes lead in communicating strategy to the agency; coordinates communications across the Enterprise; educates others on the strategy

  • Trusted advisor to agency

  • Establishes and maintains pipeline

  • Manages cross-sell and up-sell opportunities across the team; generates cross-sell opportunities

  • Manages the sales process including planning, operating routines, and monitoring

  • Coaches and mentors others on sales practices

  • Is well versed about every aspect of The Hartford's Value proposition to best position us for success

  • Is professionally demanding and holds internal and external customers accountable

Qualifications:• This is a great opportunity for Middle Market or Casualty Underwriters looking to expand their knowledge into high hazard liability risks. In this role, they are able entertain accounts that many consider out of appetite.• 5+ years of Commercial carrier underwriting or broker experience required• Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining solid relationships with all internal and external business partners• Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills• An ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions• High energy self-starter, who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit• Demonstration of solid time, organizational, and desk management skills• Goal-oriented and delivers outcomes• Ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win• Superior technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills

• Position title and tier will be determined upon careful review of selected candidate's qualifications

• This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office or making in-person sales calls 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$98,800 - $178,200

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
