How does this role contribute to our collective success?

AXIS Re is looking for an Underwriter to manage a portfolio of Casualty Treaty Reinsurance business focused on the U.S. across all sizes of clients and deals including many that are global in nature. This role will drive new business generation and be highly involved with the strategy, portfolio management and optimization in line. The candidate must have an executive presence, demonstrating success in communicating, influencing, and building solid relationships that add value to the AXIS business book and contribute to longer-term strategic initiatives and focus on profitability.

This role reports to the Head of Casualty, North America AXIS Re. The lines of business include General Liability, Umbrella, Excess Liability, Workers Compensation, Regional, Captive and Alternative Risk, in addition to other ad hoc lines of business.

What will you do in this role?

  • Originate and underwrite Casualty treaty business in compliance with the appropriate guidelines and within allocated authority ($5M) while conforming to best practices and focusing on efficiency in approach.

  • Build and maintain broker and client professional network to support profitable business origination through the Reinsurance broker market

  • Drive strategy and portfolio management work including appetite, guidelines, limit management, etc.

  • Track industry and market developments and raise these for strategic discussions with clients including a considered view as to how AXIS Re might help the client navigate the changes.

  • Participate in underwriting audits and monitoring of account performance.

  • Maintain an understanding of all current issues affecting the insurance and reinsurance industries with respect to the Casualty lines of business.

  • Frequent travel to service customers and attend industry conferences.

You may also be required to take on additional duties, responsibilities and activities appropriate to the nature of this role.

About You:

Casualty Treaty Reinsurance Underwriter will be a “hands-on” technical expert with a history of success within a top-tier Reinsurance Carrier focused on building a complex book of Treaty Casualty Reinsurance. Candidates will have deep contacts within Reinsurance Broker channels and full life cycle portfolio management across; solicitation of submissions, underwriting analysis, preparing and issuing indications/quotations/binders, and marketing.

What you need to have:

  • Able to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience at all levels, including Executive Leadership

  • Working knowledge of actuarial and pricing concepts. Experience partnering with actuarial teams to price and structure reinsurance treaties.

  • A thorough understanding of the underlying business including General Liability, Umbrella, Excess Liability and Workers Compensation.

  • Strong focus on identifying client needs and flexibility in developing solutions

  • Enthusiasm for new business opportunities and the desire to think creatively

  • Strong communication, negotiation and influencing skills

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage peak period workflows

  • Highly collaborative and versatile; with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Have a strong grasp of policy forms, contract wording and pricing schemes. The individual should also understand the role and impact of claims, actuarial, accounting, and finance in the underwriting process and be a strong collaborator with these functions.

  • Excellent marketing skills are required to develop and maintain relationships with reinsurance intermediaries and customers

  • Able to make decisions and be resilient when faced with ambiguity and changing priorities

  • Able to self-start own tasks and to independently lead small projects

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant discipline

What we prefer you to have:

  • CPCU, FCAS, ACAS or other industry designations

  • A minimum of 10 years of treaty experience in progressively advancing casualty roles in reinsurance underwriting or brokering

  • Able to build dashboards and data models using Power BI

  • Can perform lookup functions, design pivot tables and create analysis from multiple data sets in Excel

  • Strong industry relationships and well respected by reinsurance brokers and insurers

  • Effective strategic relationship management and portfolio management skills

Role Factors:

In this role, you will typically be required to:

  • Travel frequently to visit clients, brokers and attend industry conferences

  • Be in the office (or visiting brokers/clients) 3 days per week

  • Attend broker events in evenings and occasionally at weekends as required.

What we offer:

For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of (NY) $220K-260K, (NJ) $200K-240K, (IL) $190K–230K, (GA) $185K-$225K. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.

In addition, you will be offered competitive target incentive compensation, with awards based on overall corporate performance and your individual performance. On top of this, you will be eligible for a comprehensive and competitive benefits package which includes medical plans for you and your family, health and wellness programs, retirement plans, tuition reimbursement, paid vacation, and much more. 

This role is Exempt for FLSA purposes.
