Job Summary

Provide direct primary health care to patients, in collaboration with consulting physician and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to include identification, management, and/or referral of health problems.

Responsibilities

  • The APN works in the Student Wellness Center and manages straightforward to moderately complex medical problems and encourages health promotion and disease prevention. With a focus on providing holistic, integrated care, the APN collaborates with other health professionals to provide high quality care for students at the University of Chicago.
  • Conducts comprehensive physical examinations, gynecological or episodic health assessments and develop patient care plans within clinical nursing practice and medical care protocols.
  • Takes patient histories and conducts physical examinations; screens patients to determine the need for hospital admission, making referrals to other disciplines as indicated, writes progress notes; prepares patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings; obtains psychosocial history relevant to patient care, and assumes responsibility for developing therapeutic relationships with patients.
  • Orders and schedules laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient.
  • Evaluates outcomes of care delivered to patients and initiates changes accordingly.
  • Participates in development of collaborative practice arrangements.
  • Assumes accountability for patient care in making decisions, prescribing appropriate medications as set forth in the delegation of prescriptive authority, prescribing appropriate treatments, delegating tasks, and maintaining a comfortable environment for the patient.
  • Collaborates with and acts as liaison among the nurse, patient, family, physician, and community resources for coordination of patient care.
  • Selects appropriate communications approach to achieve desired outcomes of patient care.
  • Actively pursues required knowledge and skills for professional development.
  • Identifies and participates in quality assurance initiatives.
  • May participate in health education in the community.
  • May participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician.
  • May prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • May participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.
  • Acts as a resource for clinical skills to staff inside or outside the unit. Practice specific and invasive procedure privileges are detailed in each APNs Delineation of Privileges.
  • Interprets assessments, treatments, outcomes, work and disability status, and screenings in a thorough manner. Maintains clear and concise records to meet the requirements of the department and any applicable standards or laws.
  • Analyzes test data or images to inform diagnosis or treatment.
  • Participates in counseling patien s about prescribed therapeutic regimens, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance. Interprets patient\'s condition quickly and concisely and determine the best course of treatment. This can include ordering appropriate laboratory or imaging studies, discussing patient with the Emergency Physician and/or referring patient to consultants.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and training in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Education:

  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
