GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The Municipal Security Officer (MSO) fills a limited authority uniformed position. Municipal Security Officers fill an armed limited authority uniformed position and are primarily responsible to ensure the safety and security of the Cheyenne Municipal Court and court employees against unauthorized, illegal, and potentially life-threatening activities. MSOs also provide security services for all municipal property and surrounding premises. Municipal Security Officers may be tasked to assist Patrol CSOs with specific duties/functions.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - MUNICIPAL SECURITY OFFICER: The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Interpret and respond to disruptive scenarios quickly and be trained in Use of Force techniques to appropriately handle the scenario, as needed to protect life, limb and property.
  • Control court facility entry and identification systems which includes operating security screening equipment to detect weapons, contraband, and prohibited items, checking items such as handbags, briefcases, computers, packages, baby carriages, wheelchairs, etc.
  • Responsible for providing security presence in the courtroom, enforcing local and state law and judicial orders within the courtroom, enforcing local court rules regarding prohibited items and providing protection to court proceedings as circumstance dictate.
  • Manning of court and municipal facility stationary posts which may include (but are not limited to) monitoring closed-circuit television, duress alarm systems and other security equipment, courtrooms, judges chambers, and jury rooms.
  • Responsible for securing unattended courtrooms, inspection of courtrooms prior to a proceeding, testing of security devices, and other duties concerning security of the court area.
  • Maintain custody of prisoners and perform secure transport as required within the court facility, and to and from detention facilities as directed.
  • Patrol court facilities, parking facilities and other municipal grounds in accordance with applicable post orders.
  • Enforce city municipal codes and state statutes while in the performance of assigned duties. This includes (but is not limited to) preventing any person from attempting to gain unauthorized access to city property, or a court proceeding(s) or attempting to commit acts that imperil the safety and security of city employees, property and the public.
  • Prepare various reports and records regarding unusual court room incidents or unlawful acts that occurred within the court facility area or other municipal properties.
