Job Description

As a member of the Advancement Communications & Marketing (ACM) team with the Office of University Advancement (UA), the copy editor/writer is responsible for managing the internal copy editing process, editing for grammar and style, and acting as the final proofreader ensuring editorial accuracy of most, if not all, communications before they are printed or otherwise published.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Content Strategy, the person in this role will be a team player who possesses an extensive knowledge of editorial style, with the ability to translate that knowledge into practice and adapt to industry changes as they emerge. In short, they will be the ACM and UA authority on editorial style.

Primary Duties:

  • Copy edit/proofread all UA content to ensure perfect grammar and compliance with UA style

  • Manage the internal copy editing and proofreading process and systems as necessary

  • Ensure proper documentation and maintenance of the UA style guide, keeping it up to date with any changes to common editorial guidelines

  • Collaborate with partners inside and outside UA as dictated by the project process

  • Manage Boston College Magazine’s Class Notes section, including collecting, editing, fact-checking, and proofing Class Notes and obituaries for all BC classes; and ultimately ensuring completion and delivery of a quality Class Notes section both in print and online

  • Complete writing assignments in support of ACM projects and priorities as necessary

Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $75,900 to $94,850; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, Journalism, Communications, or similar fields

  • Three-to-five years of professional experience writing, proofreading, and editing the work of others

  • Experience working with others, including writers, copyeditors, proofreaders, and other communications freelancers

  • Sharp attention to detail is required, especially with regard to proofreading documents, and expert knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style and Associated Press style manual

  • Strong organizational skills and a proven ability to prioritize under pressure and deal with frequent changes as well as the ability to manage multiple assignments concurrently

  • An understanding of higher education administration and/or university advancement is a plus
