McDermott Chief Structural Engineer in Chennai, India
Job Overview:
The Chief Structural Engineer proactively identifies and solves the most complex Structural (Eng) problems and uses ground-breaking methods to think beyond existing solutions. The Chief Structural Engineer directly impacts McDermott’s results by developing innovative solutions and works with Senior Management, customers, regulators, and/or vendors to influence Structural (Eng)-related decisions. The Chief Structural Engineer is recognized as an expert within the company and supports teammates by sharing their technical expertise and discipline-related knowledge.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Perform conceptual, FEED, and detailed analyses and design as per design basis, project specifications, design codes, and standards
Develop creative and innovative solutions that are reliable and cost-effective for problems and challenges when they arise
Interface with Customer senior technical personnel in developing solutions to these issues
Apply expertise to the development of new concepts, technologies, and/or products
Manage own time to meet objectives and (as Lead Engineer) forecast and plan resource requirements
Develop plans that impact the achievement of business results and participate in the development of business strategy
Influence senior management decisions that impact business direction
When acting as Lead Engineer, in addition:
Direct large Engineering team as a Lead Engineer
Lead the Discipline engineering design of the assigned work area and complete it within the planned schedule and budget, in accordance with standards, MDR, and project-specific procedures and to a high professional standard
Plan, organize, and direct all aspects of Discipline execution on the assigned project including scope, deliverables, schedule, and all manpower resources - agree allocations with the Discipline Manager
Ensure interfaces and deliverables are clearly identified
Maintain responsibility for progress and productivity, identifying any required corrective action
Act as project representative for Discipline during meetings with the Project Team, Customer discipline lead, and relevant agencies such as certifying authorities, auditors, third parties, etc.
Develop advanced knowledge of project execution and managerial skills
Train/mentor other employees in the department
Assist and monitor MOPEX offices on projects
Have an excellent understanding of the other engineering departments
Have an excellent understanding of construction/fabrication yard and client requirements
Obtain engineering analysis and design results that are the same level as best-in-class in the Industry, and clearly presents to customers
(Technical / Analytical) Makes significant contributions to internal technical and analytical development efforts
Develop patents relevant to company business and/or contribute peer-reviewed papers and presentations to industry conferences and forums
Have commercial insight
Help to maintain Unifi
Prepare bids from sketching data, using experience
Supervise engineers and designers
Define scopes of work for engineering/ construction fabrication yard
Provide engineering support as required
Prepare specifications
Manage (design) subcontracts
Review of vendor data
Prepare technical bid evaluations
Assist in furthering the department
Tasks as Engineering Specialist:
Coordinate, coach, and check the work of senior and junior engineers
Conduct peer reviews on request
Provide technical assistance where required
Perform the most unique and complex problems having an impact on normal practice and business
Provide others with tools and approach to solve problems and improve processes
Explains and recommends technology design and innovation and implement them to standards and procedures
Design optimization considering client, project management, and operation requirements
Prepare structural analyses and reports on calculations or perform specialist tasks (i.e. architectural designs, underground piping designs, complex structures, topsides, jackets, weight control reports, center of gravity reports)
Is specialized in several fields (geotechnical, steel, concrete, dynamic calculations, FEM, fatigue calculations, earthquake, jackets, FPSOs, blast, hydrodynamics, architectural, …)
Is specialized in several design codes (EC, ACI/AISC/API, GOST, …)
Check designs for operational requirements, constructability, and maintainability
Prepare project engineering guides
Maintain a professional network, inside and outside the company
Has a broad view of the market and industry policies and developments
Tasks as Lead Engineer:
Work as Lead Engineer for most large-size, unique, and complex EPC projects
Coach potential lead engineers
Responsible for all engineering and design work on any project
Has full control and manages work hours, materials, progress
Explain and consider plans to Engineers, project management, and client
Recommend best practices for the execution/improvement of the project
Work in close liaison with the Design Coordinator, area leads, etc.
Has extensive MOPEX experience
Proactively manage change and clearly convey how the change will impact the team, project, and business
Set up all engineering computer systems
Assist Project Manager in:
Preparing deliverable control
Preparing schedule
Preparing progress reports
Preparing man-hour and capital expenditure estimates
Coordinate with project management
Train personnel under their supervision
Is responsible for discipline within the engineering group
Identify and manage changes in the scope of work
Is responsible for filing engineering work
Give relevant feedback to the department
Has a broad view of the market and industry policies and developments
Use technology, design and innovation
Reports to:
Project: Lead Engineer, Project Engineering Manager, or Project Manager;
Functional: Supervising Department Manager
Liaise with: All Engineering disciplines, Fabrication Group, Safety Dept,
Project Management Team, Document Control, Project Planner, Project Cost Controller, QC and Certification Group,
Procurement Group, Subcontractors and Vendors, and Customers
Supervises: Principal Engineers, Senior Engineers, Engineers and Designers
Essential Qualifications and Education:
Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Engineering
25+ years of experience in oil and gas with major a contractor or consultants predominantly performing detail design
Proven leadership experience
Preferably Registered Professional Engineer or member of professional engineering society as applicable
Seasoned knowledge of engineering standards and specifications
Good knowledge of engineering software
Able to work independently
Good working knowledge of English, both oral and written
HSE, TQM and cost-conscious
Good technical structural knowledge
Good organizer, motivator, and supervisor
Keen on improving the effectiveness of the work
Show flexibility and ensure proper hand-over with regards to:
The reassignment to other departments/construction sites/fabrication yards
The replacement of colleagues during illness and holidays
The provision of assistance to other colleagues with heavy workloads (also other projects) when possible/desirable
The managing/learning of current working methods and software applications
Detailed knowledge of design techniques and analysis methods, and detailed knowledge of the theory, content, and application of standards, codes, and guidelines as applicable
Detailed knowledge of project coordination and execution, and managerial skills
Recognized across the industry as a key lead, highly innovative designer, or highly skilled analyst
Participant in standards committees and presenter at technical conferences
