Currently, the focus is on developing the Front-End Electronics product range which provides a turn-key package to support our customers.

Role Overview

The Mechanical Engineer intern is required to support the development of bespoke solutions for space imaging systems and microelectronic packaging for custom imaging devices and Front-End Electronics for high end Space, Scientific and Medical imaging applications. This will include the design of associated assembly and test jigging, and subsequent transport packaging.

The role includes supporting the development of new design solutions from concept design through to generation of manufacturing drawings, including definition of appropriate materials. Working closely with the Electrical/Electronics Engineers, Process Engineers, Technical Authorities, and Project Managers and other colleagues to ensure the customer requirements are met.

Furthermore, the role will support the development and improvement of assembly jigs and processes used on standard product.

The Mechanical Engineer Intern will need to be adaptable, efficient, and competent using CAD. Design for manufacture, design for assembly, cost, and lead times must be carefully considered.

Key responsibilities

  • Support Mechanical Engineering activities on projects/programmes for Front-End-Electronics, ensuring customer expectations are met by delivering robust, high-quality designs on time and efficiently.

  • Translate customer specifications into suitable designs. Drive the design, procurement, and associated support equipment while identifying risks.

  • Identify and solve technical problems during the design stage, working independently when necessary.

  • Communicate technical information to both internal and external parties through drawings, reports, and presentations as required.

  • Ensure the production of internal documentation, including manufacturing drawings.

  • Provide robust, well-documented solutions to complex process issues, working closely with the relevant process engineer.

  • Carry out Finite Element Analysis using ANSYS Mechanical and ANSYS Sherlock

Essential skills and experience

To succeed in this role, you must have:

  • Working Knowledge of CAD packages

  • Design Experience

  • Proven ability to prioritise and organise own work

  • The ability to perform under pressure

  • Good technical presentation and writing of documents

Desired skills and experience

The following skills and experience are highly desirable:

  • Knowledge and experience of a CAD software; ideally PTC Creo

  • Knowledge and experience of CAD management software; ideally Windchill

  • Knowledge and experience of basic engineering principles

  • Knowledge of material behaviours and failures

  • Knowledge and experience of heat transfer

  • Knowledge and experience of Finite Element Analysis; ideally ANSYS
