Summary:
Maintains electronic medical record integrity through the timely and accurate prepping and scanning of medical records into the document imaging system for a group medical practice. Examines pages and verifies proper patient identification on each page and proper prepping and scanning methods for accurate indexing into the imaging system, evaluates & corrects duplicate medical record numbers, files and retrieves medical records, answers telephone, photocopies and faxes materials according to release of information policy, receives and greets the public, physicians, nurses, patients and other HIM customers in a friendly and welcoming manner. Ensures timely completion of death certificates as defined by NYS regulations.
Responsibilities:
EDUCATION
High school graduate
Medical terminology course
Associate's degree or equivalent with an emphasis in Health Information or Medical Office Technology is preferred; an associate's degree or equivalent may be substituted for up to two (2) years of work experience upon the sole judgment and discretion of the corporation
Designation as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) is preferred
EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of medical office experience with the primary responsibility and training related to the collection, analysis and maintenance of patient medical records. Experience with Medent, Allscripts, or other EHR platform preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Ability to perform computer functions in a Microsoft Windows environment, and able to navigate the internet
Software experience including Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Healthelink, electronic record platforms and other software platforms commonly used within a medical practice Health Information department
Thorough knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10 & CPT coding
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with all related parties
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all related parties
Must demonstrate the ability to be detail-oriented and perform tasks at a high rate of accuracy
Ability to solve problems, interpret data, organize, and work autonomously with minimal supervision required
Thorough knowledge of medical office procedures including compliance regulations
Must be able to type at or above the rate of 45 wpm
Ability to utilize all types of media: electronic health record, paper and microfilm is preferred
Understands and maintains the confidential nature of information handled and discussed
Ability to prioritize work responsibilities and maintain composure while working under demanding conditions which may involve supporting multiple objectives, physicians and satellite offices; can adapt to changing circumstances
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works in office setting, out of department storage areas and occasional travel to other office locations
