EPB Senior Engineering Technician in Chattanooga, Tennessee

Job Summary

The Senior Engineering Technician, Power System in Distribution Standards and Design is responsible for designing electric and communications system facilities to meet the needs of EPB customers. This includes designing work to serve new customers and improve and maintain EPB's infrastructure.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and modify EPB electrical facilities, both overhead and underground. Follow applicable codes, EPB standards & methods, EPB policies, and customer needs in the design process.

  • Interface with customers via site visits, phone, and email.

  • Collect customer data and/or their representative's data to estimate their electric usage and revenue, fault current for their equipment, electric account deposit, construction growth credit, create sales orders, obtain customer's approval/signature, and track cost and revenue estimates as per EPB's service policies.

  • Initiate work orders for the EPB construction department by performing a cost estimate for the work in EPB's Work Management System and a job sketch for the work in EPB's Graphical Facilities System.

  • Update EPB's Customer Information System with relevant data for the electric account.

  • Manage time and schedule to maximize customer service and individual productivity.

  • Participate during system emergencies such as storm restoration by scouting incidents, providing field information to EPB dispatch personnel, and providing oversight of contractor field crews repairing damaged electrical infrastructure (bird dogging).

  • Manage large projects as needed by scheduling, coordinating construction crews, and performing cost and workload evaluation, billing, and reports.

  • Create system standards and reports that support EPB design and construction efforts.

Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience preferred.

  • Strong electrical distribution and transmission design understanding with 10+ years of experience designing electrical facilities.

  • Proficiency in using standard business software such as Microsoft Office.

  • Proficiency in GIS, CAD, and specific EPB packages (Enquesta, GTECH, GTViewer) is preferred.

  • Knowledge of entry-level technical applications is preferred.

  • Project Management experience preferred.

    Certication and Other Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in state of residence and demonstrate safe and responsible operation of motor vehicles. Must be insurable under the company's insurance policy.

  • Strong written and oral speaking skills to share ideas and collaborate with engineers and customers, both internal and external.

  • Ability to take on new challenges and learn new skills as needed.

  • Communication, decision-making, mechanical aptitude, and customer service skills.

    EPB provides electric and communications services, which are considered critical infrastructure by the Department of Homeland Security. This EPB job is essential to support this critical infrastructure and may be required to work onsite or in the field to maintain these services.
