Chateaugay Central School District Automotive Mechanic in Chateaugay, New York

AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC - NON COMPETITIVE (NC)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work involving responsibility for the complete overhaul and repair of a variety of automotive equipment. The work requires a thorough knowledge of the trade. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed, but considerable leeway is permitted in planning the details of each assignment. May drive a school bus on an assigned route, and is responsible for the safety and conduct of the children on the bus when doing so. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate employees. The incumbent does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs skilled operations in the repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel motor equipment, including trucks, tractors, and buses; Repairs or replaces motors, pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors, and shock absorbers; Repairs ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches and front and rear axles; Adjusts connecting rods and bearings; Adjusts steering mechanism and aligns wheels/tires; Makes minor welding repairs to automotive equipment; Greases/lubes vehicles and changes oil and oil filters; Tunes engines and set the timing; Attaches and removes snow plow blades and other auxiliary equipment; Performs a variety of repair and maintenance work on ski equipment; May perform a variety of repairs and maintenance work on ski equipment such as chair lifts, T-bars, and other ski area equipment; Works as equipment operator when directed; May be required to repair other types of mechanical equipment; May operate a school bus on an assigned route When operating a School Bus on an Assigned Route: checks the operating condition of the bus before starting a trip; Reports any operational defect to immediate superior; Informs children about safety practices; Maintains orderly conduct of children on bus; Keeps interior and exterior of the vehicle clean and neat; Maintains record of mileage, routes, times and incidents; Prepares and maintains maps of routes ad prick-up points. FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade; demonstrated ability to make difficult repairs to heavy automotive and other mechanical equipment; familiarity with welding equipment and techniques; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough draft sketches and oral instructions; good motor and hand and eye coordination; good physical condition. If required to drive a school bus on an assigned route: good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations; ability to operate a bus under difficult driving and road conditions; ability to get along well with children and command their respect; mental alertness; dependability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from High School or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and one year (1) experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Possession of an appropriate NYS Drivers License will be required, and a driving record acceptable to the hiring agencys insurance carrier at time of application, maintained throughout employment. 2. Candidate must possess the appropriate level New York State Drivers License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School (S) endorsements at the time of application and must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment. In addition, candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the New York Codes, Rules and Regulations Title 8, 156.3.

SALARY: $36,233. - $43,272.
