University of Virginia Open rank tenured or tenure-eligible position in Civil and Environmental Engineering in Charlottesville, Virginia

The School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVa) seeks candidates for an open rank tenure-eligible or tenured position in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (https://engineering.virginia.edu/department/civil-and-environmental-engineering) (CEE) The primary responsibilities for this position include research, teaching, and service to the department, university, and professional community. The appointment rank and compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Our department has academic programming and research strengths in core civil and environmental areas such as transportation, environmental, water resources, structural, and construction engineering. Our research portfolio is also especially strong in three interdisciplinary areas applying innovative methodologies to the traditional domains in order to solve pressing societal challenges i.e., the Built Environment, Sustainable Systems, and Smart Cities. Our department has experienced strong growth in external funding and graduate programs, with approximately 22 faculty, 125 graduate students, 123 undergraduate students, and over $4 million in annual research expenditures.

The University of Virginia's 2030 plan recognizes Environmental Resilience and Sustainability as a major societal challenge and an opportunity for impactful multidisciplinary work that draws on our department’s existing strengths. The Provost and the deans of various schools are making multiple coordinated faculty hires to strengthen the research community focusing on Environmental Resilience and Sustainability across the University as part of a major Grand Challenges research investment of over $50M in Environmental Resilience and Sustainability (https://research.virginia.edu/initiatives/strategic-research-themes/grand-challenges-research-investments/grand-challenges-0) .

The department seeks applications from candidates who can complement our existing interdisciplinary strengths enhancing the resilience of civil infrastructure to climate-induced threats such as droughts, floods, landslides, permafrost thaw, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, and sea level rise, among others. This CEE position is part of a 3-faculty cluster (with the other positions in the School of Data Science and the Department of Environmental Science) that is focused on bridging global-scale climate dynamics with community-scale processes and systems to guide decision-making for equitable climate resilience and sustainability outcomes. Candidates should have methodological expertise in data science, artificial intelligence/machine learning, agent-based modeling, and/or stochastic modeling, applying such tools to improve civil infrastructure systems. We especially encourage applications from researchers who are enthusiastic about community-engaged research, with previous experience in sociodynamic modeling and/or local decision support. Finally, candidates should have strong interest in and capacity to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in civil and environmental engineering.

Candidates must have received a doctorate or equivalent in civil or environmental engineering by the start of their appointment. Evidence of a commitment to high-impact scholarship, funded research, undergraduate- and graduate-level teaching and advising excellence, professional and university service, and mentoring are expected.
