University of Virginia Laboratory Manager, Microbiology and Molecular Laboratory in Charlottesville, Virginia

The Microbiology and Molecular Laboratory provides both standard microbiology culture and identification, and molecular microbial diagnostics. The microbiology area sets up cultures, reads gram stains, and works up bacterial cultures. This laboratory also performs mycology and mycobacteriology diagnostics – each one of these having a separate workspace. Molecular platforms that are based on detection of microbe and virus genetic material includes a respiratory virus panel, gastrointestinal pathogen panel, and a vaginitis panel. High through put robotic platforms are used to perform bacterial and viral testing, including viral loads, that includes many important human pathogens including COVID, HIV, Hepatitis viruses, Herpes viruses among others. This laboratory is one of the few in the country that offers state of the art “next-generation” genomic sequencing to characterize antibiotic resistant bacteria

Additionally, the manager monitors and ensures full compliance with regulatory programs and demonstrates a collaborative working relationship with faculty partners on testing platforms and test menu optimization. The manager oversees more than 40 FTEs and 7 direct reports. Applicants should be focused on maintaining strong financial performance and building relationships based on trust and respect.

Job Description

Position Compensation Range: $81,078.40 - $129,729.60 Annual

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree with completion of a NAACLS approved MLS/CLS/HTL or equivalent program.

EXPERIENCE: 2 years of increasing supervisory, managerial and/or leadership experience in a complex health environment required, 4 years preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: MLS/CLS, CT, HTL, ASCP or equivalent. May require a valid Virginia Driver’s License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
