Overview of the Position

The Incubation Lab is dedicated to data-driven innovation within Commercial Lines Data Science at The Hartford. The lab focuses on value-multiplying our insurance portfolio by evaluating new, cutting-edge technologies, datasets, and insuretech vendors; prototyping predictive models; and supporting The Hartford’s data science teams and their business partners in leveraging data to drive process and product improvements.

The Hartford’s Incubation Lab seeks an energetic and passionate Senior Data Scientist to drive the design, development, and implementation of solutions modernizing and transforming our operations and business. This position requires knowledge and experience of statistical or probabilistic modeling, data transformation and visualization, and will offer career-accelerating opportunities to refine skills and domain expertise in both the business and the craft of data science.

In this role, you will be part of a team working in a fast-paced, open-ended environment with cutting edge technologies in deep learning and generative AI. You’ll help define and influence how our firm’s data scientists and business teams leverage data and machine learning to improve our processes and products.

Success will depend on your ability to break down and solve the problems of business stakeholders and other data science teams, quickly delivering valuable prototypes and recommendations.

Responsibilities

· Assess the value of new data sources and analytical techniques to ensure ongoing competitive advantage

· Design and conduct cost-benefit analysis and estimate value-add of data-driven solutions, including third party data sources, vended data science tools, new analytic and machine learning techniques, cutting edge generative AI, and more

· Remain current on data science and machine learning techniques and state-of-the-art tools and data sources

· Engage with technical and business stakeholders to define and design solution concepts

· Support the design and lead implementation of components of complex technological proofs of concept

Qualifications:

· 3-5 years of hands-on experience as a data scientist

· Bachelor’s or advanced degree in a quantitative field such as (but not limited to): computer science, quantitative economics, data analytics, mathematics, or physics. Additional experience can be substituted for formal education.

· Experience learning other teams’ business practices and brainstorming ways to create value for them

· Understanding of current and emerging IT products, services, processes, and methodologies.

· Experience with disciplines such as: predictive modeling techniques (ex: random forests), scripting languages (ex: python), coding best practices (ex: version control), SQL (ex: Oracle, PL/SQL), and big data environments (ex: AWS, GCP, Azure, Hadoop)

· Demonstrated analytical approach with an ability to uncover and resolve problems by delivering innovative approaches and solutions

· Self-motivated and results-oriented, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability, and ability to manage time and schedules effectively

· Natural curiosity with a strong desire to learn, maintain, and apply knowledge of emerging data technologies

· Basic understanding of software development lifecycle (Agile) and deployment (CI/CD)

· Strong written, verbal communication, and presentation skills with ability to effectively communicate with nontechnical partners

Desired Qualifications:

· Demonstrated experience with SQL and the python data science stack

· Track record of delivering analytical projects covering all stages of data utilization, from collection through transformation to analysis and evaluation of implications

· Passion for learning new skills

· Ability to respond to adjustment of priorities based on changing demands/needs

· Experience participating in production and rapid delivery of minimally viable products with a “fail-fast” approach

· Strong practical experience using quantitative approaches, demonstrating knowledge of their benefits and limitations

· Knowledge of property & casualty insurance business

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$106,960 - $160,440
