Array Technologies, Inc Mechanical Engineer - Systems in Chandler, Arizona

Mechanical Engineer - Systems

Job Summary:

The Mechanical Engineer - Systems role will contribute to a Research & Technology (R&T) team focused on developing next generation solar tracking systems. Focus will be on proving the load resistance, stability, and performance of mechanical/structural systems and developing innovative design methods and tools to enable efficient and competitive product offerings. The engineer will work on a team dedicated to systems design and analysis but will frequently interface with component engineers and sustaining engineers, as well as PV performance engineers. Typical functions and tasks will include deriving specific system models using fundamental principles of mechanics, statics, and dynamics. Contribute to the creation, maintenance, and improvement of specific design/analysis “tools” based on derived system models. Evaluation of test results and comparisons with analytical models.

Structural/mechanical analysis (static and dynamic) of solar tracking structures and drivetrains using commercial Finite Element (FEA) and Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD) software.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Operate existing in-house engineering calculations tools and assist in development of new tools as needed.

  • Participate in consolidating, cleaning, and enhancing engineering models that are written in Python code language.

  • Continuous improvement of engineering models/methods/processes that will improve cost competitiveness of single axis tracker products.

  • Correlate functional testing data to engineering model predictions for purpose of improving the accuracy of the engineering model.

  • Contribute to the development of new products, product enhancements, and ancillary services related to single solar power generation.

  • Define and perform engineering optimization studies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Batchelor’s degree preferably in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Structural Engineering, or equivalent.

  • 3+ yrs experience writing code in Python language. Experience with similar codes also considered.

  • 5+ yrs experience with mechanical/structural design

  • 5+ yrs experience with deriving engineering models of mechanical/structural systems

  • Experience using commercial FEA software.

  • Working knowledge of civil wind loading methods such as ASCE 7 and/or Eurocode 3

  • Proven experience with communicating complex technical concepts to a technical and non-technical audience.

  • Sound understanding of fundamental engineering principles of statics, dynamics, energy, and rotating drivetrains.

  • Ability to create engineering models of underdefined systems by making and validating sound assumptions.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

  • Previous experience with single axis solar tracker engineering

  • Previous experience with wind tunnel testing and wind engineering

  • Previous experience with MSC ADAMS MBD simulation software
