St. Joseph County ISD Assistant Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Centreville, Michigan

POSITION GOAL:

Under general supervision, to provide itinerant support to students with appropriate classroom services and IEP accommodations while assisting the Hearing Impaired Teacher Consultant in maintaining a learning environment that enables students to master life and academic skills appropriate to age, functional level and individual capacity; to perform a variety of clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel; and to perform related work as required.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assist the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher Consultant (DHHTC) with implementation individual instruction and IEP accommodations.
  2. Assist the DHHTC with instruction in the cognitive domain (i.e. language, communications, academic skills, etc) during individual and classroom settings.
  3. Assist the DHHTC with supporting students with self-help skills as it relates to communication, language and/or hearing issues.
  4. Assist the DHHTC with supporting students with community based instruction (i.e. functional academics communication, mobility training, social skills/behavior training, recreation/leisure, pre-vocational/vocational training, etc.) as it relates to language, communication and/or hearing issues.
  5. Assist the DHHTC with supporting students in group activities (i.e. group music, special programs, talent shows, etc.) as it relates to communication, language and/or hearing issues.
  6. Assist the DHHTC with support of students during ancillary services (i.e. OT, PT) as it relates to language, communication and/or hearing.
  7. Assist the DHHTC with support of students in special classes (i.e. music, art, computers, etc) as needed.
  8. Maintain schedule as set by DHHTC within local districts schools, private schools, homes and day care facilities.
  9. Work with DHHTC to become familiar with student's program philosophy (Total communication, Oral, etc.), goals and appropriate teaching techniques.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Maintain student discipline as directed by classroom teacher and DHHTC.
  2. Supervise students during emergency situations per plan designated set forth by school/facility (i.e. tornado drills, etc.).
  3. Assist DHHTC with student arrival and departure activities as it relates to language, communication and/or hearing.
  4. Assist DHHTC with support of students out of the classroom and/or school building (i.e. community based instruction, field trips, etc.) as it relates to language, communication and/or hearing.

NON-INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist the DHHTC with clerical and record keeping duties (i.e. attendance, student journals, base lining, task analysis sheets, filing, duplicating, etc.).

Assist DHHTC with maintaining amplification systems (i.e. personal FM systems, Free Field, etc.).

Complete accident and/or incident reports as needed.

Assist the DHHTC with preparation of instructional materials and teaching aids.

Verify any program/support changes with DHHTC prior to implementation.

Maintain ongoing communication with DHHTC regarding student progress or potential problems.
