Peer Specialist (Part-Time)

EAC Network, a not-for-profit social service agency that empowers, assists, and cares for over 65,000 people in need through 100 programs across Long Island and NYC, seeks a Peer Specialist to work part time for the Alternative for Youth program.

The Peer Specialist position is a non-exempt position paying $17 per hour for up to 19 hours (flexible schedule), with some possible evenings and weekends. The office is located in Central Islip, NY. The role reports to the Program Director.

Primary Purpose of Job:

The Peer Specialist is responsible for providing peer support to families and assisting the Case Management unit in all aspects of its operations in the Alternatives for Youth (AFY) Program.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide peer support including home visits, telephone reassurance, advocacy and encouragement for clients support to families in crisis struggling with problems such as substance abuse and mental illness.

  • Participate in monthly recreational events or take clients on recreational outings.

  • Assist with facilitating Teen Enrichment adolescent groups.

  • Ensure clients receive required visits per month as per Director.

  • Transport clients/families from appointments or to obtain emergency resources as needed in own vehicle if necessary.

  • Complete written reports and progress notes in a timely manner regarding clients progress.

  • Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and required training.

  • Facilitate and develop monthly educational workshops for adolescents as assigned by the Director.

  • Hold weekly female and male adolescent groups as assigned by the Director.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:

  • High School Diploma or educational equivalent required. Persons in recovery must have a minimum of three years sobriety as per funder requirements.

  • Working knowledge of criminal justice issues, mental illness, substance abuse and/or adolescent behavior preferred.

  • Must be proficient in computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, Microsoft Office applications, calendar, and email and/or database software necessary to perform work assignments.

  • Must have access to automobile and possess valid New York State drivers license.

  • Must have good communication skills, both oral and written.
