CENTERVILLE CITY CORPORATION Police Officer I-III in CENTERVILLE, Utah

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of entry level technical law enforcement duties related to enforcing the laws, maintaining the peace, and protecting the citizens of Centerville.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Police Chief, Lieutenant or Sergeant.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May provide close to general supervision to less experienced officers while in training or on a case-by-case basis.  Functions as the Officer-In- Charge (OIC) in the absence of a higher-ranking officer or by assignment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Patrol: Works rotating shifts; patrols different areas of the city in a police vehicle including streets and alleys, checking for unlocked doors, windows and building security; makes residential house checks for possible illegal activities.

Responds to calls for assistance including such incidents as traffic hazards and accidents, family fights, property crimes, crimes against people, fraud, suicides, animal problems, medical emergencies, mentally disturbed persons; secures crime scenes for evidence searches; makes preliminary investigation and interviews complainants, witnesses and suspects; makes arrests.

Controls traffic and enforces traffic laws and ordinances; directs traffic, assists motorists, issues citations and warnings for moving violations, D.U.I's, and investigates accidents involving motor vehicles.

Completes comprehensive reports of daily activities and enforcement actions including accident, offense, arrests and other forms and reports as necessary; prepares for court cases and testifies in court when required.

Performs ongoing public relations to enhance the image of the department within the community; serves processes, notices, summons and subpoenas and keeps records of dispositions.

Cleans and maintains assigned firearms, vehicles and other special equipment.

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1.     Education and Experience:

A.     Graduation from high school; plus, POST certification as a Police Officer; AND

B.     Successful completion of department field training program within first year of employment;

2.             Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Some knowledge of Centerville and its street systems; modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques and equipment; applicable Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances and departmental rules and regulations; hazardous waste classifications and emergency procedures related to control, containment and confinement; principles of law enforcement administration; legal liabilities associated with arrest and law enforcement; court room procedures and laws of evidence.

Skill in the use of firearms, the operation of police vehicles and other specialized equipment including intoxilizer, O.C., body and dash camera systems, police radio, lidar, taser, body armor, radar units, police batons and restraining devices, use of laptop computer.

*          Ability to* react effectively in emergency and stress situations; ability to exhibit imagination, initiative and problemsolving capability in coping with a variety of law enforcement situations; ability to follow standard safety practices and procedures common to law enforcement work; perform work requiring good physical condition; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.

3.       Special Qualifications:

Must be 21 years of age.

Must be clear of a prior criminal record. 

Must possess a valid Utah State Driver's License.

Must maintain firearm proficiency. 

Must maintain law enforcement certification by completing annual training requirements (40 hr).

Must pass an URMMA approved physical fitness test.

4.       Work Environment:

Tasks require a variety of physical activities such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reach ng, talking, hearing and seeing. Occasions may occur in the day-to-day operations requiring use of physical force, explosive strength and endurance related to running, lifting, etc. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.  Frequent travel required in course of performing portions of job functions. Periodic exposure to life threatening or hazardous situations which is inherent to the job. Daily exposure to seasonal weather extremes and hazards.  Health and safety conditions occasionally expose the employee to workplace mechanical hazards, explosives, electrical hazards, toxic materials, moving objects and disease/bacteria also is inherent to the job. Continuous use of motor skills.
