Coordinator of Visitor Experience

 

Southern Utah Museum of Art, on the campus of Southern Utah University, features the artwork of regional artists known for their landscapes, faculty and student artists from the SUU Department of Art & Design, as well as emerging and distinguished artists from around the country. Strengths of the nearly 2,000-object permanent collection include the body of work by Jimmie F. Jones that exemplifies his notable career in the region, as well as a robust collection of prints featuring well-known artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Salvador Dali, Katsushika Hokusai, Thomas Hart Benton, and others. Since 2019, a number of gifts and acquisitions have focused on photography such as Brett Weston, Gary Edward Adams, and a portfolio called DE | MARCATION: A Survey of Contemporary Photography in Utah. Named the best-designed museum in Utah by Architectural Digest, SUMA's building was designed by Brooks + Scarpa and inspired by the region's famed slot canyons.

 

The Coordinator of Visitor Experience position is an entry-level position that oversees a collaborative, dynamic group of peers that are instrumental in helping SUMA achieve its mission. While coordinating the activities of the Visitor Experience staff is a large portion of this position, the Coordinator of Visitor Experience will also be given opportunities to assist the Director of Learning & Visitor Experience in streamlining processes related to Visitor Experience at SUMA.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

• Oversee the team in scheduling and time off requests, including needs for special events and rentals

• Assist the team in meeting and greeting visitors and ensure team has information on current and upcoming exhibitions and programming, as well as current membership data

• Manage the gathering of visitor demographics and compile into monthly and annual reports for the SUMA Advisory Board, grant applications/reporting, etc.

• Process transactions and complete daily cash/credit reconciliation

• Answer phone calls, address questions, and give directions to visitors/tourists as needed

• Provide support during events according to priorities and needs set by the Director of Learning & Visitor Experience

• Act as the liaison between department heads in scheduling VE team members who assist in projects outside their VE responsibilities

• Maintain relationship with custodial team and submit work orders related to front-of-house

• Update voicemail, outdoor banners, and door signs as necessary, assisting with updating the website and Google as necessary

• Manage poster distribution with the Marketing and Visitor Experience team

• Maintain SUMA's Accessibility Plan, that will include short-term and long-term goals to ensure the museum building and programming are accessible for all patrons

• Work with the Director of Marketing & Design to create, maintain, and update online accommodation resources on the SUMA website

• Assist, review, and approve accommodation aspects in all SUMA programming and events

• Work with the Exhibitions Manager to review and approve all exhibition text that will be publicly displayed to ensure all accommodation needs are met

• Work with the Curatorial Affairs team on various tasks

• Coordinate schedules for Museum Assistants to assist in gallery rotations as needed, in conjunction with the Exhibitions Manager

• Oversee the planning and implementation of SUMA's involvement in seasonal art walks

• Assist with gallery tours

• Coordinate schedules for Museum Assistants to assist in tours and public programming as needed, in conjunction with the Coordinator of Engagement

• Responsible for the physical appe arance of the SUMA Shop

• Make recommendations for new merchandise based on visitor feedback

• Assist with point of sale system administration and maintenance

• Responsible for third party facility rentals

• Supervise the VE team

• Create a supportive, collaborative, positive, and healthy work environment based on respect, relationship building, and setting clear and reasonable expectations

• Participate as a Department Head, attending all department head meetings for maintaining operations

• Responsible for the team's budget, with support from the Director of Learning & Visitor Experience including a purchase card and documentation for the Business Manager

• Coordinate regular team meetings

• Oversee onboarding and training, setting performance standards, and providing timely, constructive feedback in addition to regular performance reviews

• Organize and maintain the team's Google Drive and necessary documents

• Assist in facilitating and working events/programs such as the Art Auction and the annual Dia de Muertos Festival of Altars

• Assist with grant applications in conjunction with the Business Manager

 

Proposed Education and Experience Requirements:

 

• Proficiency in all Google Workspace applications, particularly Google sheets

• Skills in organization, written and verbal communication, problem solving, and attention to detail

• University degree preferred

• Must have had at least one year of recent cash management experience

• Proven leadership skills

• Solid communication and interpersonal skills

• Ability to actively engage in conversations with people of all ages and at all levels

• Flexible availability - works weekends and some evenings
