POSITION: Morning Latchkey/Day Camp Lead

DEPARTMENT: Carson City Corps

SUPERVISOR: Corps Officer and Office Coordinator

STATUS: Non-exempt (hourly)

  • BASIC PURPOSE

The purpose of this position is to assist with the implementation of summer activities involving children age 6 to 12, along with consideration for children’s safety and supervision within Day Camp Setting.

The underlying theme of all established programs will be to express the love of Jesus Christ and to reach out to the community’s youth no matter where they may stand in their walk of faith.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote the Mission of The Salvation Army.

  • Promote TSA Day Camp Program

  • Properly supervise Campers and Volunteers

  • Assist in the implementation and coordination of daily Chapel Assembly Programs, Craft time, supervise both indoor & outdoor game activities, field trips planning, preparation and cleaning time, and securing building and Salvation Army property.

  • Efficient handling of program paperwork process – enrolling, calling parents, filing, stats.

  • Ensure campers, volunteers and staff safety while they participate in the program.

  • Serve as a positive role model for staff, volunteers and campers.

  • Greet the campers and their families in a friendly, compassionate, and welcoming manner, to affirm that we strive to provide support and hope.

  • Consistently invite campers and their families to other TSA events such as away camp and Sunday Church as posted through flyers and communicated by TSA staff.

  • Represent The Salvation Army in a positive and consistent manner.

  • Transport campers to and from camp overseeing youth from Carson City and other corps as assigned while at camp.

  • Aid in the process of head lice inspection and treatment of away camp campers.

  • Maintain cleanliness and order within the Day Camp areas which include chapel, fellowship area, kitchen, storage area, bathrooms, hallway, and foyer. This includes organization of day camp cabinets and campers lunch chests, back pack storage area, and the distribution and disposal of all finished craft items, lunches, etc.

  • Relate joyfully and sensitively to staff, volunteers, parents and campers.

  • Inspect, upkeep, and drive Salvation Army vehicles with campers, volunteers and staff for field trips as needed. Properly secure Salvation Army vehicles. Inform corps officer of any vehicle issues as they arise.

  • Use appropriate positive discipline consistently. Convey any discipline issues to parents/guardians. Communicate areas of concern and follow through with discipline procedures. Maintain an approachable rapport with parents/guardians to insure proper behavior and continued success of children in Day Camp.

  • Follow all Salvation Army policies, procedures, guidelines and Protect the Mission policies.

  • Other duties as assigned by corps officer.

  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 21 years or older with a valid Nevada driver’s license and have experience working with children.

  • Education Requirements

  • High School diploma required.

  • CPR Certified

  • Skills

  • Strong desire and ability to work with children and parents.

  • Efficient Skills in supervising campers and volunteers.

  • Ability to do paperwork processes (enrolling, copying, filing, stats, and contacting parents)

  • Ability and confidence to plan and assist in teaching a variety of activities.

  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Be a team player and thrive in a team-oriented environment.

  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of program, staff, volunteers and camper’s information.

  • Have a current First Aid and CPR certification (Training opportunity will be provided).

  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.

  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as chairs, tables, cabinets, and reach overhead.

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
