Job Summary

The Laboratory Manager plans, organizes, and directs the overall operation of the Laboratory Department. Activities include a variety of chemical, microscopic, and bacteriological tests and procedures for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This position ensures that services are of the best quality, are cost contained and are carried out in expeditious manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan, organize and direct laboratory operations and ensure compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.

• Make daily rounds in Laboratory to judge effectiveness of operation, utilization of personnel and supplies, and general ethical and professional atmosphere.

• Secure and maintain the physical facilities, equipment and supplies which are required to carry out effective patient care and create an optimum physical environment.

• Initiate, interpret and enforce Laboratory Services procedures and maintain and interpret hospital policies and procedures.

• Directs and advises staff in analyzing test procedures and is available for consultation as needed.

• Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies; develops an inventory system, oversees cost control measures in the utilization of supplies, materials, equipment and personnel.

• Defines the Laboratory criteria for quality control, proficiency testing and reporting of test results to meet regulatory requirements.

• Establishes satisfactory specimen requirements for testing to ensure the reliability of test results; designs lab requisitions and coordinates improvements in the Laboratory reporting system.

• Evaluates test results that appear inconsistent with clinically relevant criteria and monitors the immediate notification of the physician when critical limits of specified test results are exceeded.

• Confers with Laboratory staff and clinical staff on new methodologies and procedures.

• Oversees Laboratory in improving organizational performance by quality assessment and continuous quality improvement, safety, environment, infection control, and compliance with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.

• Participates in such activities as committees, in-service programs and other functions related to establishing effective communications inter and intra departmentally. Directs the department’s continuing education program; directs department in-house meetings on a monthly basis.

• Assess that the Laboratory provides timely and accurate test results. Maintains contact with physicians to obtain appropriate input, identifying problems and addressing them in a timely manner.

• Hires and assigns Laboratory staff who have appropriate education, experience and training for specified positions and evaluates personnel in accordance with performance standards.

• Establish and maintain standards of performance and ensures competency and appropriate licensure of personnel.

• Interact professionally with patient/family.

• Cooperate in planning programs and safety and emergency preparedness.

• Responsible for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of performance improvement initiatives.

• Responsible for providing 24/7 functionality of Laboratory Services.

• Write departmental policy and procedure manuals and updates as required.

• Maintains CLIA certification for all necessary locations of the organization.

• Promotes a supportive environment in which employees are encouraged to solve problems and address customer issues.

• Works willingly and accepts assignments as given.

• Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.

• Participates in opportunities that enhance personal and professional growth.

• Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.

• Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.

• Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations.

• Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.

• Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include assisting the department Director with the following: interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

• Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related field of study with one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position Requirements, Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

• Certification as M.T. (ASCP) in American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

• Knowledge of CLIA regulations required.

• Strong leadership skills.

• Experience with successfully managing budgets.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Demonstrated performance excellence and leadership qualities.

• Excellent organization, interpersonal, and customer service skills.

• Ability to work independently, make decisions, meet deadlines, and solve problems; working under a moderate to high degree of pressure.

• Experience with hospital-based computer system.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, customers, patients, families and the general public.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Computer work is frequent.

May be exposed to infectious diseases and occupational dangers like accidental needle pricks. Must be able to withstand physical and emotional stress.
