The Position

The City of Carlsbad Library & Cultural Arts Department has immediate openings for Library Technicians (Part Time) to join our team to work in Genealogy, Bilingual Services and Public Services

Candidates will have excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills, an outstanding work ethic, and flexibility to work with new programs and services. They will also be able to receive, internalize and grow from feedback, understand confidentiality, assume positive intent and react to stressful situations in a calm, professional manner.

Qualified applicants will be notified only if selected to participate in an interview. Part time employees cannot exceed 980 total hours worked within one fiscal year and receive 40 hours of sick leave per fiscal year. The scheduled work hours for Library Technicians will vary and may be distributed over all library and outreach hours, including evenings and weekends.

Key Responsibilities

Library Technicians work cooperatively as part of a team to fulfill the mission of providing community members of all ages with convenient access to high-quality resources and services to inform and enrich individual and community life.

Tasks include, and are not limited to:

  • Providing exceptional customer service

  • Assisting patrons in person, via phone or computer-based systems at a service desk

  • Sorting and shelving library materials

  • Responding to general inquiries from patrons

  • Using automated systems to register patrons and manage user accounts

  • Assisting patrons in the use of technology and electronic resources

    Library Technicians may fulfill Courier duties including:

  • Drive a City vehicle (valid California Driver’s License and a good driving record required upon hire)

  • Be able to comfortably lift up to 50 pounds

  • Work cooperatively in a shared space

  • Manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Be dependable, flexible, and patient

  • Be able to anticipate needs

  • Be well-organized

  • Possess excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills

  • Demonstrate initiative and good follow-through

    In addition, Library Technicians may:

  • Plan and carry out programs and classes for all ages

  • Provide information, reference and research assistance to library patrons

  • Provide recommendations and assist patrons with locating books and materials

  • Direct the workflow of others including reviewing work for accuracy, compliance with procedures, and assigning work as needed

  • Participate in outreach events and connect with the community at large

  • Assist and instruct patrons in the library’s makerspace and memory lab

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Possess excellent customer service and written/verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work cooperatively with the public and coworkers

  • Compassionate when working with clientele with diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality

  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks with attention to detail

  • Proficient working with mobile devices and computers, including the internet, online databases and Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams

  • Passionate about libraries, literacy and helping individuals meet their goals

Experience & Education

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would qualify.

  • Previous experience working in a public library setting is highly desirable

  • Oral and written fluency in both English and Spanish is highly desirable (required for Library Technicians in Bilingual Services)

  • For the Genealogy position, experience with genealogy resources and a passion for research is preferred.

    Physical Requirements

  • Need to be able to operate equipment, including, but not limited to, some that may require rapid adjustments such as computer keyboards and terminals, printers and photocopiers

  • Must be able to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing skilled movements such as rapid keyboard use

  • Need to be able to perform frequent downward or upward flexion or turning of the neck, fine finger dexterity and grasp to manipulate the keyboard, telephone, writing instruments, papers, books, manuals and reports

  • Job entails standing, bending, stooping, climbing, reaching at and above shoulders and twisting at the waist

  • On a frequent basis, the incumbent must be able to squat or kneel

  • Must be able to safely carry up to 50 pounds

  • Must be able to safely push heavy book trucks up to 60 pounds

  • This position may require exposure to the outdoors
