The Educational Sign Language Interpreter is responsible to fulfill requests primarily in the educational setting. The Educational Sign Language Interpreter must be a qualified interpreter who is able to provide communication access to students, teachers and staff in settings requiring sign language, both receptively and expressively in a preK-12 public school setting. The interpreter must be able to culturally mediate situation that arise during the school day and assist the student with all communication needs.

  • To provide American Sign Language in PreK – 12 public and private school settings.

  • To educate classroom staff on issues related to deafness and American Sign Language through in-services when requested.

  • Interpret teachers’ and other students’ comments during the school day and in after school activities. As well as, interpret the Deaf student’s comments to ensure equal access and equal participation in all activities.

  • Reviews coursework materials in advance so that classroom activities can be conveyed clearly and accurately.

  • Interpret services during tutoring sessions, counseling sessions, annual reviews, school assemblies, and after school activities (if available).

  • Provides information about students’ communication and language needs to teachers in mainstream classes.

  • Exhibit exemplary interpersonal skills in dealing with students, staff, and parents. Project a positive image for Living Resources and an ability to collaborate well with the school team.

  • Educate students and staff in the strategies, processes, and protocol for using an educational interpreter.

  • Participates in staff and building meetings as appropriate and as requested by teachers or by Program Supervisor.

  • Participate in professional development. Continue to learn and advance skills related to the educational setting.

Requirements

  • Must have taken the Educational Interpreting Performance Assessment or be in pursuit of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA 3.5 or higher)

  • BA degree is required.

  • Interpreting skills a must with a minimum of three years experience.

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Able to work independently and use good judgment

  • Must be flexible and have good problem-solving skills

  • Understanding of Deaf Culture and fluency in American Sign Language.
