Purpose: Assist in continuous improvement activities in first time quality, process reliability, throughput, new product implementation, operating cost (cash flow) in the steel melting and refining operating areas. The order of priority is safety, first time quality, process reliability and throughput. These will hereafter be referred to as objectives. Responsibilities: * Provide specialized, data driven practices or temporary operating practices for melting operations to attain the objectives of the FSP Steelmaking process. Effectively communicate these issues to ensure that melting and refining and hourly employees are aware and standards/work instructions are updated. * Assist Area Manager of Refine/Melt in cross functional teams that are responsible for continuous improvement in the objectives of the FSP Steelmaking area and enhancement or creation of measurement systems which monitor and assist management to drive progress towards business plan objectives. Develop/enhance/modify meaningful Key Process Variables (KPVs) which help attain the objectives. * Continually improve the operations, value and efficiency of equipment, services, purchased materials, consumables and systems by working with suppliers, consultants and other associates. As necessary, serve as project lead for capital improvement projects, developing project plans, identifying resources and ultimately be responsible for project cost and timeline goals. * Provide technical advice and input to assist the FSP Steelmaking supervisors. Assist Area Manager and supervisors to monitor safety practices and procedures (e.g. internal safety program, meetings, accident investigations, etc.) that provide measurable improvements in worker safety and reduced workers compensation costs. Become involved in reliability planning at to the extent that key pieces of equipment that lie on critical path to attaining objectives will be addressed to achieve business plan results. Coordinate activities with the Area Manager Steelmaking Reliability and all appropriate direct reports. * Identify and plan training programs for the associates in refining and casting where specific improvement activities require such training. Arrange, develop and provide training as required, working with OA employees as appropriate * Drive EHS performance to industry leading performance by managing EHS goals, participating in Iron Shield, participating in housekeeping audits, and leading project implementation to ensure improvement in leading and lagging indicator performance. * Communicate between various departments, continuous improvement teams, SBU and plant staff through daily contacts, regular coordination meetings, and as required for special projects. * Develop skills as necessary to assist and perform frontline supervision, including on rotating operational shifts. Minimum Qualifications * Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering with experience in melt shop, continuous caster, supervision, or manufacturing preferred. Preferred Qualifications * Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a TimkenSteel/Metallus internship in melt shop, continuous caster, supervision, or manufacturing.
