Position Information

Position Title Security Officer (Part-time)

FLSA Non-Exempt

Primary Responsibilities

To provide a safe and secure environment for members of the University community and visitors through the enforcement of University policies as well as village, state, and federal laws. Maintain a working knowledge of the St. Lawrence University student handbook, university rules & regulations, and security departmental policies & procedures.

Patrol campus on foot, by bicycle, or by vehicle, dressed in authorized uniform.

Respond to emergencies, provide assistance as appropriate, and summon appropriate assistance as required.

Investigate and report all suspicious activity on campus. Conduct preliminary investigations of incidents and submit detailed written reports on appropriate forms and database.

Provide money and safety escorts for the university community as requested.

Unlock and secure all buildings according to procedures and special requests. Assist faculty, staff, and students in gaining authorized entrance to classrooms, offices, and residence halls, etc.

Assist in crowd control and traffic control at special events, athletic games, concerts, accidents, and other critical points.

Assist visitors and provide information as requested.

Respond to all life-safety device alarms to include fire alarms, smoke sensor activations, and access control alarms including removing all obstructions causing access control alarms and silencing alarms as needed and/or directed. Report any defects in the above mentioned life- safety systems to appropriate departments.

Conduct personal safety and security awareness programming as requested.

Perform all other duties as assigned or delegated.

Schedule: Flexible; shift work; MUST be willing to work days, nights, weekends and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma required, Valid driver’s license with a demonstrated safe driving history. Current CPR certification preferred, must be able to complete certification. Must meet all requirements of the New York State Security Guard Act of 1992 in order to be registered, and maintain registration, as a Security Guard; Applicants must exhibit dependable work traits; be physically able to perform required patrols over considerable distances including ascending and descending stair levels of at least 4 levels on a daily basis; be physically able to respond to emergency conditions including lifting heavy objects; other physical exertion as required. The officer must be able to exercise sound judgment and self control in emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications

Associates Degree preferred; One or two years of law enforcement experience or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and ability can be acquired preferred. NYS Security Guard License or NYS 8 hour Pre-Assignment Security Guard certification preferred.

Salary $18.50 - $26.99/hr. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.
