Position Title Assistant Director Fraternity and Sorority Life & Volunteer Services

Primary Responsibilities

The Assistant Director is a key member of the Student Activities team and supports efforts in positioning student activities as a hub for campus engagement, student connection, and co-curricular learning. This position provides leadership and vision within the functional areas of Fraternity and Sorority Life, Volunteer Services, and advising Junior and Senior class councils. The Assistant Director oversees advising and governance of the fraternity and sorority community, leads education and training programs for chapter officers, and maintains relationships with advisors and national offices. In addition, this position advises service-oriented clubs and organizations, fosters and maintains strong relationships with campus and community partners, and leads the execution of key University traditions including Senior Week. The Assistant Director reports directly to the Director of Student Activities.

The Assistant Director is a full-time, 12-month position. Remuneration includes a competitive salary and benefits package, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date for this position is June 1, 2025.This position has the option to be a live-in position with occasional on-call responsibilities in exchange for a furnished on-campus apartment and campus meal plan.

Primary Responsibilities

Fraternity & Sorority Life

  • Lead the Fraternity & Sorority community including: advising Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council; advising Chapters (including officers, officer trainings, members, and new members); coordinating meetings, communication, standards, education with Chapter advisors, and national representatives; coordinate fraternity and sorority recruitment efforts.

  • Plan and lead new member recruitment processes with councils and chapter leadership.

  • Enhance the fraternity and sorority experience through incorporation of best practices and collaborate with the Fraternity & Sorority community to foster a culture of active community engagement, mutual respect, and accountability. Maintain strong mutual relationships with inter/national headquarters, advisors, and house corporations.

  • In collaboration with the Director of Student Activities, lead risk management education and processes including hazing prevention, safe social hosting, recruitment, and self-governance.

  • Facilitate a culture of well-being through programming, education, and advisement of the fraternity and sorority community.

Volunteer Services

  • Serve as advisor to service-based clubs and organizations and advocacy groups. Assist with budget proposals, general operations, event planning, risk management, identity formation, and promote learning moments through reflection exercises; provide ongoing workshops and interactive training for these clubs and organizations.

  • Foster strong relationships with university partners, as well as local community partners, to support and enhance volunteer connections and service opportunities; this includes annual signature events and/or the creation of new engagement opportunities, as needed.

  • Enhance the university’s network of community partners and serve as a resource by understanding local community needs & how they align with student interest and potential opportunities for future community service initiatives.

  • Manage Volunteer Services student interns and advise them on leading opportunities to plan events, recruit volunteers, execute volunteer programs, and promote these events.

  • Manage the Volunteer Services budget and oversee the budgets of service-based student organizations and/or funding awarded by grants.

  • Support service-based student organizations in coordinating Alternative Break Trip opportunities, including site selection, training for student trip leaders, and promote a meaningful educational experience.

Class Councils

  • Advise Junior and Senior class councils and provide guidance to students on fundraising, event planning, and other initiatives.

  • Lead the planning and execution of the Senior class celebrations, including the 100th Night event and Senior Week; lead all event planning, risk management, safe social host processes.

  • Lead in the hiring, training, and supervision of student staff for Senior Week.

Other Responsibilities

  • Support the office of Student Activities and student organizations in the creation, promotion, and execution of collaborative large-scale social programming targeting evenings, weekends, and key University-wide events including annual large-scale programming events. This may include support for Laurentian Weekend, Titus/Rail Jam, Scarlet & Brown Day, supporting senior week, or other high-risk, large-scale events.

  • Participate in appropriate staff development opportunities, serve on campus, community, and professional association committees, appropriately keep supervisors abreast of matters sensitive in nature, and other responsibilities as assigned.

  • Maintain student data and records in a manner that ensures confidentiality and aides in the assessment of programs and strategies

  • Other projects and duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work nights and weekends.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree in a related field, or documented progress towards obtaining one, is preferred.

  • 1-3 years experience working with or supporting a fraternity/sorority community is required.

  • 1-3 years of prior experience in higher education as a professional staff member, graduate assistant, and/or a student paraprofessional leader.

  • Demonstrate a proficient theoretical understanding and application of student development theory and an appreciation for working in an inclusive, multicultural environment at a private liberal arts college.

  • Understand emerging issues in higher education, particularly as it relates to fraternity and sorority life and student leadership development.

  • Demonstrate intercultural competence and a commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice practices.

  • Comfortable with using and/or learning new technologies, software platforms, and A/V equipment.

  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as student programming needs and major events require.

  • Possess initiative, personal integrity, excellent interpersonal communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and a good sense of humor.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Salary $60,405.80
