JOB SUMMARY
The Apprentice Electrician is a training position to develop the knowledge and skills a Journeyman Electrician will need to maintain system substation facilities.
The Apprentice Electrician is trained in and will be responsible for all the activities in the maintenance of substations including: Power Circuit Breaker Operation, Maintenance, Repair, Troubleshooting and Timing; Equipment Print Reading; Installation and Commissioning of New Substation Equipment; Large Power Transformer Maintenance and Repair and Gasket Preparation; Plumbing, Carpentry, Rigging, Sheet Metal, Calibration, Machinist, and Welding; Perform Live Line Work in Substations by utilizing Hot Sticks and Gloving methods.
The starting salary will be based upon the conditions of the Memorandum of Agreement Wage Schedule between Georgia Power and IBEW Local Union Number 84, which includes an increase every six months until you max out in your job classification and a cost of living increase every July.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Job Experience and Education:
This is an entry level position. Experience with electrical and mechanical systems is desired.
The majority of the work of an Apprentice Electrician is the mechanical maintenance of large electrical equipment.
An understanding of both mechanical and electrical maintenance techniques is a plus.
Two-year technical degree in Electronics, Electricity, Electronic Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Electrical Construction & Maintenance, Electrical/Mechanical highly desired.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules and regulations.
Relevant, work-related experience with basic transformer theory, single-phase, and three phase motors preferred.
Candidates must have a basic understanding of wiring diagrams and control schematics.
Knowledge of electrical symbols and formulas will be necessary: Wiring diagrams and control schematics. Basic transformer theory. Single-phase and three-phase motor basics. Basic AC & DC electrical theory.
The ability to use precision measuring tools is essential.
Must have knowledge of Vernier Scales and Standard Scales.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Good hand and eye coordination.
Behavioral Aspects:
Candidates must be willing to work outside in all climate conditions, work at significant heights above the ground and must be available for overtime and emergency call-out. All jobs require 45 minutes callout response time and 50% availability.
Candidate must be willing to maintain regular attendance.
Must be available after hours for service restoration.
Must be available for scheduled overtime.
Need to be willing to relocate for job opportunities.
Must understand the value of customer service and support.
Other Requirements:
To be considered for an interview/day in the life, candidates must pass two pre-employment written exams (basic mechanical aptitude - CAST test; and electrical theory - SKAT test).
Candidates must pass CAST test prior to being eligible to take the (electrical theory) SKAT test.

All candidates who are invited for an interview will be preferred to provide one of the following:
Valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) - Class A OR
Valid CDL Learners Permit OR Be able to obtain a CDL permit before they Start.
If candidate is military - obtain a Georgia CDL Permit Waiver
If the candidate currently does not possess a CDL Permit, the candidate must be able to attain a CDL- Class A within 6 months of hire date.
Any candidate who holds a current CDL License will require full verification with current & past employers.

Familiar with driving and backing large vehicles.
Positions are union-covered with statewide seniority.
Subject to callout overtime situations and callout availability standards.
Because of the nature of our work and weight restrictions on our equipment, a candidate must currently weigh (and maintain their body weight) at or below 300 pounds - fully dressed including steel-toed work boots, safety harness and hardhat.
If the candidate is selected after the interview a thorough background check and DOT drug screen will be conducted prior to employment (after a job offer is extended). In addition, you must successfully meet requirements for a Pre-Employment (DOT) physical exam approved by our company physician. There is also a POET physical exam required. All exam cost will be covered by Georgia Power. All travel expenses associated with completing these requirements are at the expense of the candidate.
This position has been identified as a role that will require the use of a Georgia Power fleet vehicle. The following will be required if you are selected for this position:
Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver’s license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver’s license).
Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
Must consent to a continuous monitoring of your Motor Vehicle Record
Pay
- This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement (union contract) between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84. Union membership is optional, however the starting salary is governed by the union agreement. Current starting pay for the Substation Apprentice Electrician is $5724.00 /month.
TRAINING
---Apprentice Electricians will undergo an extensive training program including classroom, skills, and on-the-job training. The training program lasts approximately 3-4 years.
---Upon successful completion of the training, the employee is eligible to bid on Journeyman Electrician positions as they become available.
