Located 28 miles south of Rochester, 70 miles west of Syracuse, and 85 miles east of Buffalo, Canandaigua is a city in Ontario County, New York. The population was 10,545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ontario County. It is 32 miles south of the shore at Lake Ontario. Pactiv Evergreen Canandaigua, was founded in 1966, as a former Mobile Chemical plant. As one of Ontario County’s largest employers, for over 50 years we have focused on producing and distributing the highest quality food service and food merchandizing packaging products. Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy:
· Develop and implement a strategic vision for the Materials Engineering department.
· Lead, mentor and grow a team of materials scientists and engineers.
· Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in materials engineering.
· Work closely with product designers, manufacturing, procurement, and marketing teams to ensure seamless integration of materials into product designs and production processes.
· Monitor global trends in sustainable packaging and integrate emerging technologies into the company’s product portfolio.
· Manage the department’s budget and allocate resources effectively to meet project timelines and objectives.
· Oversee multiple projects, ensuring they are delivered on time and within scope.
Materials Development:
· Oversee the research, development, and testing of new materials for food packaging, including biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable materials.
· Conduct feasibility studies and technical assessments of new packaging concepts.
· Oversee the design, prototyping, and testing of new packaging structures.
· Ensure materials meet industry regulations, food safety standards, and sustainability requirements.
· Evaluate and collaborate with material suppliers to ensure quality and consistency.
· Drive supplier partnerships and aid negotiations to secure the best materials and pricing and stay at the forefront of material innovation.
Process Improvement:
· Identify and implement process improvements to enhance material performance and cost efficiency.
· Identify opportunities to improve existing materials and processes to enhance performance, reduce costs, and meet environmental standards.
· Establish quality benchmarks and testing protocols to ensure materials meet functional, aesthetic, and safety requirements.
· Analyze material performance and troubleshoot issues in production or end-use applications.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
· Master's degree or PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
· 10+ years of experience in materials engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within the food packaging or related industry.
· Strong knowledge of food-grade materials, including polymers, bioplastics, paperboard, molded fiber, and coatings.
· Strong understanding of polymer science, materials characterization techniques and packaging manufacturing processes.
· Proven leadership experience with a track record of developing and managing high-performing teams.
· Proven track record of driving sustainable packaging initiatives.
· Familiarity with regulatory standards such as FDA food packaging regulations, and ASTM testing methods.
· Excellent communication, and project management skills.
· Ability to foster innovation and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred Skills:
· Experience with advanced manufacturing processes, such as extrusion, injection molding, and coating technologies.
· Knowledge of lifecycle assessment (LCA).
· Strong industry network with materials suppliers and research institutions.
A reasonable estimate of the current range is $150,000 - $250,000 + bonus + benefits. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. At Pactiv Evergreen, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
