TECHNICIAN B, ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH AND SAFETY (EHS), Environment, Health and Safety Office- Industrial Hygiene Program-Asbestos Program, to assist with laboratory or research work and operate experimental and technical equipment under the supervision of scientific personnel/technicians of a higher grade. Will play an instrumental role in the collection, shipment, and paperwork associated with MIT’s efforts to collect samples of building materials before they’re disturbed and have them tested for asbestos content; and perform other duties in support of the Asbestos Program. Duties include arranging meetings with MIT personnel to review work scope and develop material sampling strategy; arranging access to space; collecting bulk samples and logging information; preparing samples for shipment; completing chain of command paperwork to ensure proper tracking; data entry; writing reports; calibrating air pumps and conducting post-monitoring check of pumps; monitoring compliance with the disposal of asbestos containing materials; assisting with record keeping and day-to-day operations; and assisting with other EHS responsibilities in the regulated medical waste, lab plastics recycling, and ventilation qualification measurements programs. May deliver asbestos awareness training to MIT staff and be assigned duties in higher classification levels to fill in for sick or vacationing technicians or to fill an immediate need as determined by EHS management.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: high school diploma, graduation from a two-year technical day school, good customer service and communication skills, basic computer skills, ability to obtain an asbestos inspector’s license within six months of employment and maintain certification by completing annual refresher training, and ability to work with minimal supervision. Job #23665Work conditions: use of ladders, entering dirty/dusty spaces (attics, tunnels, utility chases, etc.), collecting samples by using tools to break off or extract pieces suitable for analysis, lifting weights of at least 50 lbs.Must be able to meet the requirements of MIT’s Respiratory Protection Program, including passing a medical examination to determine fitness to wear a respirator.Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check.4/18/24
