City of Cambridge Community Planning Intern in Cambridge, Massachusetts

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: # The Community Development Department (CDD) is the planning agency for the City of Cambridge. The Community Planning Division guides growth and development to improve quality of life in the City by providing planning and design services related to citywide and neighborhood planning, development review, and parks and public space planning, design, and programming. This position is a valuable opportunity for individuals interested in planning, architecture, or landscape architecture to gain first-hand experience in planning and development review in a very active planning office, working directly with senior planning staff. The Community Planning Intern will provide general support for the division with a specific focus on open space planning, public space activation, and equitable community engagement. Specific activities would include: * Creating and maintaining an inventory of Privately-Owned Public Spaces (POPS) to be made publicly available * Assisting in the development of standards for the design, amenities, and operational standards of POPS * Supporting development of the City's open space plan, including research and data analysis. * Researching, analyzing, and summarizing best practices related to public space programming and activation * Research best practices on inclusive community engagement in neighborhood planning processes * Additional projects may be identified based on the applicant's skills and interests and the division's needs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. *__ *MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Qualified candidates would possess: * Academic or professional experience in urban planning, with a focus on sustainability, urban design, architecture, or landscape architecture * Current or recent graduate student in related fields. * Overall computer proficiency including general office applications (Microsoft Office suite) and advanced applications (e.g., Adobe Acrobat) * High level of motivation and detail-oriented skills * The City of Cambridge's workforce, like the community it serves, is diverse. Desired Skills and Interests An ideal candidate would possess: * Knowledge and interest in the technical and policy basis of sustainable design and development, energy, and green buildings. * Background in LEED rating systems, and zoning and/or green building ordinances * Ability to use various computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. *__ *WORK ENVIRONMENT: Standard office environment. Fluorescent lighting and air conditioning. Moderate noise level. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer. Answer telephones and maintain multiple files. May require minimal lifting of up to 10 pounds.
