Serco Lead Naval Architect in California

Position Description

Are you seeking a hybrid opportunity working in a fast. team based multi disciplined environment, while collaborating with others and supporting the navy, coast guard, and commercial customers, Serco has a great opportunity for you! This position is located in Victoria, British Columbia, however for the right candidate; a remote work schedule may be considered.

This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain/maintain a Canadian Security Clearances (Reliability/Controlled Good or higher).

Serco supports multiple customers including government customers and shipyards in various stages of design as well as in-service support of ships, submarines, crafts and other floating structures.

The Lead Naval Architect will demonstrate sound knowledge and deep experience as subject matter expert in one or more disciplines within the field of Naval Architecture and mentor less experienced technical staff in undertaking tasks within these disciplines. The person will also apply knowledge of Naval Architecture to perform hands on work pertaining to routine analyses and preparation of basic naval architectural deliverables in support of design for new builds as well as development of Engineering Change work package for In-Service Support of ships, submarines, crafts, and other floating structures.

You will be a member of the team or leading a team working for a Ship Design Manager or Engineering Manager and/or working closely with the customer and other Serco teams for designing ships, or in-service support of vessels.

Depending on the scale of the project you could also be assigned the role of Ship Design Manager where you will be responsible for the technical management of the project, or for coordinating / managing the compliance of all the ship specifications/ requirements, or for delivery of only the Naval Architectural design products.

You will apply naval architectural knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards, and will use naval architecture tools and software to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas when directly assigned any of these tasks.

As a Lead Naval Architect, you will apply naval architectural knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas:

  • Development and validation of design and engineering requirements, preparation of specifications, and provides inputs to technical reports and presentations. Provide hull form and hydrodynamic performance, including development of hull form geometry and lines plans, hydrostatics and curves of form, resistance and powering estimates, propulsor design and performance, appendage design, maneuvering analyses, seakeeping analyses, development of model test plans and observing and analyzing data from model tests or full scale trials.

  • Provide weight and stability analyses, including development of weight and center of gravity estimates, performance of intact and damaged stability analyses, performance of deadweight surveys and inclining experiments.

  • Provide concept and feasibility design studies addressing whole ship sizing and performance analyses, requirements validation, and design optimisation.

  • Perform design integration, coordinating inputs from various naval architectural and other engineering disciplines, such as marine engineering and structures, into balanced, closed solution designs to establish principal characteristics and design features such as length, beam, depth, draft, displacement, speed, and other performance parameters.

  • Perform structural design, developing hull girder bending moments and structural configurations and scantlings in accordance with appropriate rules or design standards, development of superstructure, mast, and local support structure to withstand primary and secondary loads.

  • Make general arrangements and configuration, developing requirements for area and volume, preparing overall ship arrangement concepts and drawings illustrating primary functional allocation of spaces within the ship considering location and adjacency constraints, performing special studies including access and line of sight analyses, assisting in detailed layouts of individual compartments such as living and berthing spaces, ship support spaces, storerooms, and shops Assists with the review of design proposals and specifications.

You will also:

  • Participate in or lead scheduled project review sessions and meetings with representatives from other engineering disciplines and customers on technical and engineering issues.

  • Prepare documentation, reports, white papers, options analyses reports, and project plans to describe activities planned and accomplished, status reports, letters, memoranda, messages, and contact reports.

  • Prepare and make presentation in formal briefings and staff seminars.

  • Train, guide and mentor naval architects and technical staff.

  • Ensure compliance with all corporate policies and procedures, including quality assurance and security procedures, in the performance of duties.

  • Be effective in communication and working in a diverse team environment.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or related engineering field such as Ocean Engineering, or equivalent in training and experience, entry level. (A post graduate degree in naval architecture or a related field is considered an asset.) with a minimum of10 years relative work experience is required. In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 20 years applicable work experience.

  • Must be eligible to obtain a Canadian Security Clearance (Reliability / Controlled Good or higher).

  • Experience performing design integration, coordinating inputs from various naval architectural and other engineering disciplines.

  • A demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams and programs.

  • Due to the remote flexibility of the position, candidates outside of the commutable area must be willing to travel up to 50% (within Canada) for this role.

Additional desired experience and skills:

  • Possessing a Professional Engineer’s designation is considered an asset.

  • Current active Reliablity Status clearance.

In compliance with local laws regarding pay transparency, the salary range for this role is $119,905.39 to $207,836.49; however, Serco considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
