Shell Commercial Trading Analyst in Calgary, Alberta

Position Purpose

About the Opportunity:

The Canada Low Carbon Fuels Team has created a new opportunity in Calgary, AB for a Commercial Trading Analyst (CTA) to join their highly qualified and collaborative team, at our new home in The Bow Tower. The CTA is a key member of the Global Low Carbon Fuel Trading team and Global Products Trading organization. This team member regularly engages with multiple stakeholders in the Trading organization including Regional Team Leaders, Traders, Operators, Settlements and Operations Analysts, along with colleagues from various other departments.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work very closely with Traders and other experienced trading professionals in fast paced environment and to support bottom line results. There is also significant room for development and learning about the trading business. This role requires confidence managing short deadlines and handling sensitive matters with energy and accuracy.

Since the 2023 Clean Fuel Regulations implementation within Canada, The Low Carbon Fuels (LCF) business has been responsible to optimize the Shell Canada compliance program. New regulations are driving significant increases in low carbon policy complexity and the LCF Canada team has experienced significant growth and faces unique requirements in market analysis and desk management. The energy transition is a central topic in Shell’s energy business and this exciting position will be at the center of that major transformation.

This team trades Ethanol, Biodiesel, Biojet, Renewable Diesel along with their feedstocks and related derivatives, in addition to supporting Shell’s biofuels short term requirements and longer-term strategy. The Biofuels market is young and rapidly evolving and additional resource for both support and analysis is a vital part of the growth of the business.

Accountabilities:

  • The successful applicant will work on the LCF Canada desk and provide backup coverage for US colleagues on various tasks including:

  • Trade deal entry and exposure/profit and loss tracking

  • Record and maintain storage provisions and track business costs against planned offsets

  • Variable Costs Reconciliation

  • Manual price true-ups and settlement support for bespoke and atypical deal types

  • Interbook, Regrade and Loss-Gain contract entry

  • Setup of new counterparties

  • Resolving Profit & Loss and exposure issues

  • Reconciling Tradebook

  • Maintain a strong Compliance culture and adhere to Shell Business Principles

  • Lead and partake in special project initiatives in LCF through collaborating with other teams in trading, scheduling and accounting

  • Develop a deep knowledge of hedging instruments and Trade book structures

  • Produce market price data Graphs and any historical analysis type work as requested

Skills & Requirements:

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Engineering or another related field

  • Minimum of 3 years work experience in financial/accounting field within the energy, oil and gas, or another related industry

  • Advanced MS Excel capabilities are required

  • Ability to work with multiple Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as Endur, OLE or QlikView would be considered an asset and training will be provided

  • Systems knowledge or strong learning aptitude for new systems in business related applications and tools
