POSITION OVERVIEW:
Startec Refrigeration Service is currently recruiting for a 2nd or 3rd Year Apprentice Industrial Refrigeration Mechanic to work at our Calgary, Alberta location (9423 Shepard Road SE ) This role offers the opportunity to further develop expertise in refrigeration installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance while contributing to a collaborative, safety-focused environment. Rates are determined based on experience and tenure. The pay range for Apprentices (1st to 4th year) is $26.95 to $45.81 per hour (depending on supplemental rates/premiums).
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):
ON THE TOOLS (Weighting 70%) Equipment Installation & Maintenance
Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of industrial refrigeration systems, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion valves, and piping.
Follow technical specifications, blueprints, and engineering drawings to ensure accurate and efficient installation of refrigeration equipment.
Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning coils, replacing filters, and checking refrigerant levels, to optimize system performance.
Troubleshooting & Diagnostics
Assist in diagnosing and troubleshooting refrigeration system issues, including mechanical, electrical, and control-related problems.
Collaborate with experienced technicians to repair or replace faulty components, such as compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion valves, and motors.
Utilize appropriate tools, equipment, and testing devices to conduct repairs and ensure proper system functionality.
System Testing & Performance Evaluation
Assist in conducting system tests, such as pressure testing, leak detection, and performance evaluations, to ensure optimal operation and efficiency.
Collect and analyze data related to system performance, temperatures, pressures, and energy consumption .
Collaborate with senior technicians to interpret test results and make recommendations for system improvements.
LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT (Weighting 20%) On-The-Job- Training
Actively participate in on-the-job training and learning sessions.
Seek opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills in refrigeration mechanics through training programs and certifications.
Follow instructions and guidance from experienced technicians to develop expertise in the field.
Gain knowledge of industrial refrigeration systems, including components, controls, and operation principles.
Develop an understanding of refrigeration tools, equipment, and maintenance procedures.
Teamwork and Collaboration
Collaborate effectively with other team members, including mechanics, supervisors, and other apprentices.
Follow instructions from experienced mechanics and actively participate in team meetings and discussions.

COMPLIANCE (Weighting 10%) Repairs & Component Replacement Compliance
Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines when working with electrical circuits, refrigerants, and high-pressure systems.
Follow established procedures for refrigerant recovery, recycling, and disposal to comply with environmental regulations.
Health & Safety Compliance
Always adhere to safety protocols and regulations, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and others.
Stay updated on industry standards and best practices related to industrial refrigeration systems.
Participate in safety training programs and follow proper procedures for handling refrigerants and hazardous materials .

Maintain accurate records of work performed, including equipment maintenance, repairs, and parts used.
Complete service reports, work orders, and other documentation as required.
Report any safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, or potential issues to supervisors or senior technicians .
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Registered with Apprenticeship Industry Training (AIT) as a second/third -year apprentice (Refrigeration)
Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean Driver's Abstract
Basic knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical principles, and refrigeration fundamentals.
Familiarity with hand and power tools commonly used in refrigeration installations and repairs.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate effectively with colleagues and supervisors.
Physical stamina and strength to lift heavy equipment and work in physically demanding environments.
Strong commitment to safety protocols and the ability to adhere to safety guidelines.
Willingness to learn and develop skills in the field of industrial refrigeration.
