CITY OF BURLINGTON IT Systems Engineer in Burlington, North Carolina

**What you will do Your primary responsibilities will include managing, designing, and maintaining the Citys IT infrastructure, focusing on network and server administration, cloud services integration, and ensuring security across all IT systems. You will be troubleshooting network, security, and system issues, monitoring security logs, and safeguarding all city assets.

**Expected Hiring Range:$70,366.40 - $90,000.00Annually. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications. A starting salary above the range listed may be considered for highly qualified individuals not to exceed the maximum of the grade.
Examples of Duties
- Configuring, administering, upgrading, deploying, and migrating firewalls, along with the installation, maintenance, and monitoring of Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches.
- Deploying, troubleshooting, and maintaining wireless networks, including city Wi-Fi and public access wireless.
- Securing network connectivity for critical systems such as door access, cameras, and servers.
- Collaborating with Systems Engineers to optimize system performance and implement new or replacement systems to meet the citys evolving needs.
- Reviewing system logs, troubleshooting, and addressing issues within critical systems like email archivers, storage arrays, and virtual servers.
- Coordinating with IT staff for firmware and OS updates across network and security hardware.
- Administering Microsoft Entra, Office365, Exchange, and MFA/SSO platforms, as well as managing Windows Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and NTFS permissions.
- Implementing and managing CIS and NIST controls for enhanced security.
- Utilizing PowerShell and scripting to automate tasks and streamline operations.
- Maintaining up-to-date documentation of network, security, server systems, and related infrastructure.
- Providing support for IT specialists and assisting with service desk operations, PC deployments, and ensuring system compatibility.
- Ensure the seamless operation of the citys network infrastructure, providing stability, security, and cutting-edge technology solutions to meet the needs of the community.

Qualifications
Tech-Savvy:A seasoned professional with broad expertise across storage administration (SAN and NAS). Proficient in fiber networks and cloud technologies, with hands-on experience in SQL Server and Microsoft server administration. Key skills include:
- Strong knowledge of OSI model data flows, network subnetting, and traffic management through ACLs (Access Control Lists).
- Certified or equivalent knowledge in CCNA, VMware, and Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFW).
- Skilled in cloud-based security management and cloud infrastructure design.
- Thorough understanding of subnetting and planned network designs for optimized performance and security.
Tech Mastery:Demonstrated expertise in virtualization platforms, including VMware, Nutanix, and OpenShift, to optimize infrastructure efficiency and scalability. Proficient in managing PKI infrastructure, delivering seamless and secure system connectivity. Technically Fluent:Proven expertise in Microsoft Terminal Servic s, and Cisco Layer 2/3 switch configuration and maintenance to ensure secure system access and optimized network performance. Skilled in managing Palo Alto and Cisco firewalls, along with Wireless APs and Wireless LAN architecture, to deliver reliable connectivity and robust security. Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree or equivalent education/experience, preferably in MIS, IT, or technical systems focus.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Network Engineer in a medium-sized organization (1000+ nodes).
- Minimum of 5 years of experiencesupporting network equipment in a medium-sized Cisco environment (1000+ nodes).
- Minimum of 5 years of experienceadministering and supporting Microsoft-based servers and endpoints.
- Valid drivers license
Preferred
- Coursework and Certificationsin systems analysis and design.
Supplemental Information
Physical requirements:The role involves exertion of up to 50 pounds occasionally and negligible constant force to move objects. Occasional climbing is required. Visual acuity to prepare and analyze figures, operate a computer, and ensure the accuracy and neatness of work is necessary.
