Overview:

Role leads reputation management including crisis communications for the organization. Stays apprised of emerging risks, leads crisis and issues planning efforts. Provides insights and communications strategies for wide range of established and emerging issues related to the organization such as cyber security, social, financial and other potential reputational issues and opportunities. This role is collaborative, steady, and forward-thinking crisis and issues management professional that drives internal and external stakeholder communications planning, testing and executing in a multi-stakeholder environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead, develop and execute communications strategies for internal and external crisis situations.

  • Expert partner for enterprise-wide crisis and risk management teams.

  • Proactively connect the dots to ensure all key stakeholders are engaged and key audiences are considered in managing and mitigating issues.

  • Collaborates closely with business partners to develop, test, manage, and evolve crisis playbooks.

  • Leads consultation across executive leaders on matters of public affairs, social and reputational significance.

  • Work closely with risk management team as appropriate.

  • Enhance issues management identifications and process.

  • Support broader communications team as needed.

  • Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.

  • Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.

  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities:

  • Initially an individual contributor

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years in communications role taking on increasing responsibility including experience with crisis management, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 14 years’ higher education and/or related work experience including a minimum of 10 years in communications role taking on increasing responsibility including experience with crisis management.

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience advising c-suite or other senior executives

  • Proven leader and demonstrated team player with excellent interpersonal, listening and management skills. Ability to build relationships at all levels of the organization.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills including crafting stories and messaging, media relations, presentations, and project management.

  • Ability to operate calmly under pressure in matrixed environment.

  • Proven ability to connect the dots, trend spot, and anticipate potential risk is critical.

  • Experience to influence, build consensus, and offer differing perspectives when advising on sensitive issues, understanding the audience, and communications best practices.

  • Team player

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in developing and implementing issues and crisis communications strategies at company or communications firm.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in financial services or other highly regulated industry

  • Knowledge of the industry's competitive landscape and an understanding of the market and regulatory factors that affect the banking industry.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $145,114.31 - $241,857.18 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
