In support of Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York (PPCWNY)’s mission, theLicensed Practical Nurse (LPN)will provide direct clinical care offered through several programs from family planning to surgical services ensuring patients receive professional services in a timely manner. This position plans, directs and evaluates total nursing care for the treatment of all patients. The LPN also performs routine laboratory testing including blood draws.

Essential Functions

Health Center Practice

  • Accurately records data in the electronic health record regarding the patient’s health history including obstetric, gynecologic, contraceptive, medical, surgical, family health and psycho-social backgrounds

  • Performs routine vital signs and lab tests such as weight, blood pressure, urine, hemoglobin, pregnancy test and venipuncture’s as necessary

  • In an objective, unbiased manner, discuss pregnancy options with women and offer appropriate referrals and description of services

  • May duplicate labels for contraceptive pills according to the orders written in the chart

  • Assumes legal responsibility in conjunction with PPFA for proper ordering, handling and distribution of medications and supplies in compliance with State and Federal laws and with appropriate orders from the assigned clinician

  • Perform routine injections as directed by clinician

  • Assist providers with abortion procedures and acts as a support to the patient

  • Sterilizes instruments

  • Monitors patients in the recovery room

  • Set up and clean procedure and utility room

  • Maintain appropriate stock of supplies in exam rooms

  • Perform quality controls as directed

Counseling and Education

  • Provides information and counseling on reproductive services; abortions, sterilization as well as family planning methods: oral contraceptives, IUCs, diaphragms, cervical caps, condoms, vaginal spermicide, sponges, natural family planning, etc. Coordinates follow up visits with the clinicians as needed

  • Provides information and counseling in areas of health maintenance and reproductive care such as nutrition, infertility, sexuality, family planning, breast self-awareness, menopause, HIV antibody testing and safe sex techniques

  • Learns and uses information about how the needs of diverse patients can be sensitively met (LBGTQ community, varying ethnic cultures/practices, survivors of sexual assault, etc.)

Other Accountability Activities

  • May participate in the quality improvement program; follows up and reports all complications to the Compliance Quality & Risk Management (CQRM) department

  • Accepts individual and joint responsibility for, participates in and works to achieve productivity, customer service and capacity goals as set by PPCWNY

  • Travels to other sites throughout Erie & Niagara counties via their own transportation to perform nursing duties as directed by the Health Center Manager and Clinician

  • Participates in the orientation of new health center nurses, providing observational experience for medical and nursing students; may assist with nursing staff orientation and in-service education

  • Stocks rooms and ensures that needed supplies and equipment are on hand; contacts the appropriate person(s) before supplies of any kind are depleted

  • Shows respect to patients and co-workers for differences in backgrounds, lifestyles, viewpoints and needs in areas such as ethnicity, race, gender, creed and sexual orientation

Requirements

Qualifications

  • LPN with current New York State license required

  • Practical Nursing Completion, Diploma, or Associates Degree in Nursing

  • Bilingual candidates highly desired and are strongly urged to apply

  • One year of nursing experience preferred

  • Experience with GYN care highly desirable

  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff, ability to work in a fast-paced environment; able to juggle multiple priorities a must

  • Must have excellent communication skills (verbal and written), be able to work a flexible schedule, and travel to other sites as needed

  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid NYS driver’s license not in jeopardy of being revoked

Work ScheduleThis is a full-time (37.5 hours/week) or regular part-time (22-30 hours/week) position. Days may vary Monday-Friday with rotating Saturdays required.

Benefits & CompensationAt PPCWNY, we are committed to equitable compensation practices and transparency. In alignment with these efforts, the pay for this position ranges from $20.92 and $24.32/hour. Actual compensation will be determined by experience and other factors permitted by law.
