What you’ll be doing: As our Landscape Operations Crew Chief you will be overseeing assigned sites as well as repairs. You will also be working with contract workers to ensure compliance, order materials, advise clients and more.

You will be responsible for…

  • Performing and directing employees to perform landscaping and mowing work

  • Preparing site plans, specifications and cost estimates while conferring with clients

  • Evaluating staff performance alongside supervisor and attending staff meetings

  • Overseeing the maintenance of field tools and equipment

    What we need from you:

    High School Diploma plus one-year full-time experience in a work setting training others or one-year full-time experience in the janitorial field

    Valid NYS Driver’s License & approved driving record

Position Summary: Oversees assigned sites for efficiency and ensures contract demands are being met. Oversees all repairs of lawn and landscape equipment to ensure equipment is maintained. Works with assigned crew site contract workers while in the field to ensure compliance with contract specifications, approve/order required materials, advises clients, and directs landscape personnel and/or perform work to meet time frames, design and drainage.

Reporting Relationship: Reports to Coordinator of NYSID Supports & Services.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct

  • Performs landscape and lawn mowing activities or directs others to complete such work as specified in contracted services.

  • Operates and oversees the safe and efficient operation of hand and power equipment consistent with design and usage to complete professional work as contracted.

  • Reviews labor hours in conjunction with supervisor to ensure hours are within contract limits.

  • In conjunction with supervisor, schedules contracted work and projects to meet deadlines and maximize efficiencies.

  • Following Agency purchasing practices, assists in the ordering of all materials to complete projects in cost effective manner and schedule either delivery or arrange to have work crews pick materials up in a timely fashion.

  • Train and oversee landscape crews to include: preparing land and structures for improvements as laid out in proposal and designs as approved by customer, assure accurate placement of plant materials and construction material consist with design plans, etc., in landscaping; trains and/or directs the Lawn Foreman to train personnel in the operation of lawn equipment consistent with Industry practices, insures all work is completed consistent with contracted requirements.

  • Follows the pre-determined schedule of work crews to meet both deadline commitments and to produce best efficiencies in completing work.

  • Completes seasonal snow plowing and salting consistent with contracts and timeframes.

  • During the offseason, in conjunction with Management, plans for growth, develops efficiencies, recommends equipment and strategies to grow business.

  • Ensure crew member safety, to include: all PPE requirements of OSHA are completed with needed training; attends OSHA trainings; and ensures that all crew members have documented training prior to operating Agency equipment; follows Agency first aid policies/practices.

  • All other duties as assigned

  • Business Operations

  • Prepares and presents quotes to supervisor for landscaping services as assigned.

    • Prepare site plans, specifications, and cost estimates for landscaping/lawn business; confer with clients; seek new work opportunities through marketing, writing proposals or giving representations.
  • Follows landscaping schedules to meet all customer contractual agreements and to maximize efficiency in completing daily routes.

  • In collaboration with supervisor, resolves customer performance issues consistent with good business practices.

  • Supervision

  • In collaboration with supervisor, evaluate staff performance consistent with Agency performance evaluation guidelines and procedures; when appropriate recommends to supervisor any promotions, increments and terminations.

  • Recommends selections and assignment of staff to supervisor.

  • Attends staff meetings for the purpose of regular consumer progress review, workload review, analyzing and resolving of business operations.

  • Supervision of individual staff persons on a regular basis consistent with agency policy.

  • Mechanical

  • Oversee maintenance of field tools/equipment and maintain inventory controls of such equipment, including crew trucks, lawnmowers, power tools and other machinery with small gas engines.

  • Conduct routine inspections to verify all machines, engines, and hydraulics function properly.

  • Conducts mechanical diagnostics, equipment repair, and safety inspections of various systems including brakes, suspension, electrical and hydraulic, diesel, gas, 2-cycle and 4-cycle motors, as well as on-road and off-road equipment; maintains equipment, parts and supply inventory.

  • Demonstrates efficient improvement of light-duty landscape equipment (e.g., mowers, weed-eaters, hedge trimmers), heavy-duty landscape equipment (e.g., trenchers, skid steers, chain saws), and related tools (e.g., pruners, saws, loppers); uses hand tools, power tools, and precision-measuring and testing instruments.

  • Troubleshoot mechanical problems and resolve them efficiently. Observes mechanical devices in operation and identifies causes of trouble; dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts; tests mechanical devices to assess their performance; lubricates and cleans parts.

  • Operates and oversees the operation of hand and power equipment consistent with design and usage to complete professional work as contracted.

  • Maintains service logs and records of preventative maintenance for all equipment.

  • Anticipates needed equipment, parts and supplies and makes recommendations for replacement as part of the annual budget process.

Qualifications and Education Requirements: High School or equivalency diploma PLUS one year full-time Have experience in a work setting training others or one year full-time experience in the janitorial field PLUS Must have a valid NYS Driver’s license, approved driving record and reliable transportation to all parts of greater Erie County area. Essential Job Functions:

  • Equipment Operation: The ability to operate vacuums, buffers, automatic floor machines and other miscellaneous power cleaning equipment; operates Agency vans and buses; may perform occasional snow shoveling or leaf raking; May fill in periodically in enclaves that involve packaging, assembly lines, lawn care, and snow removal; will regularly operate agency trucks, buses, vans and cars to transport consumers and or equipment used at work sites.
