Unifrax Battery Technologist in Buffalo, New York

Job Requirements

The Battery Technologist will provide day-to-day technical and operational management of Alkegen's lithium-ion battery cell assembly and testing laboratory. The activities driven by the Technologist will support internal R&D and market-driven needs.

This is a hands-on role that will split time between the lab bench and the office desk. The Technologist reports to the R&D Director - Battery, and routinely interfaces with multiple functions including R&D, Application Engineering, Marketing and Sales.

Responsibilities

  • Must have a collaborative spirit and interact across R&D, cell design and process teams to effectively and efficiently advance Alkegen’s core SiFAB® silicon anode technology.

  • Manage and take responsibility for a cell testing laboratory including maintenance, use and upkeep of gloveboxes, cyclers, coaters, etc.

  • Lead efforts in material testing, including: electrode processing, cell assembly and testing and data processing.

  • Able to write, follow and educate teams on standard operating procedures and keep detailed records for all associated equipment maintenance and material/cell testing.

  • Carry-out design of experiments for determining next steps in material and cell understanding.

  • Perform in-depth data analysis on experiments and use datasets to justify new experiments.

  • Managing a team of technicians from day-to-day activities in the cell testing laboratory.

Experience

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Battery-related Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering or a similarly relevant field with 2+ years of experience post-Ph.D. Or M.S. with equivalent work experience (+4 years)

  • Prior background knowledge of silicon-anode technology is heavily preferred.

  • Knowledge of chemical and electrochemical interfacial reactions between silicon and cell components (electrolyte, etc.) strongly preferred.

  • Extensive hands-on experience in design and fabrication of lithium-ion battery cells from separate components (active materials, slurries, coatings, etc.) to full cell design (coin cell & pouch cells).

  • Ability to preform root cause analysis and cell diagnostics.

  • Knowledge of industrial standards for battery materials, processing, and testing protocols.

  • Must have experience in utilizing electrochemical characterization techniques such as EIS, CV, three electrode cells, etc.

  • Must have experience characterizing materials using analytical techniques such as SEM, EDAX, XRD, FTIR, ICP, etc.

Salary Range: $95,000 - 110,000 / yr
