Job Requirements:

The Laboratory Services Engineer develops test methods, maintains lab equipment and performs tests for Alkegen at the Riverwalk facility in Tonawanda, NY. The Engineer possesses an in depth understanding of the hardware and software characteristics of each piece of equipment, and will work closely with key external customers as well as internal Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, and Technical functions to understand their laboratory service requirements, and to provide the necessary technical analysis. The Engineer will support the Laboratory Services Manager in identifying and implementing improvements for the laboratory capabilities, and in providing local day-to-day support for the Technicians, including writing technical reports to clearly explain test results. The Engineer must be a driven completer finisher with the ability to work effectively unsupervised.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform laboratory services using all available laboratory equipment, in accordance with safety protocols.

  • Maintain laboratory equipment in good working order and provide for periodic calibration and laboratory correlations.

  • Manage and improve safety and quality standards.

  • Develop new test methods as required to answer technical questions for internal and external customers.

  • Interpret and report data to clearly explain test results.

  • Work effectively with external laboratories as needed.

  • Provide key technical support to Marketing, Sales, Manufacturing and Technical functions.

  • Maintain systems for storing and managing laboratory data in cooperation with the global systems.

  • Support coordination of activities for local Laboratory Services Technicians.

    Qualifications/ Experience:

  • BS degree in a technical or engineering field. An advanced technical degree is beneficial.

  • Working knowledge of mechanical, chemical, materials science, and ceramic fields, particularly as they relate to inorganic specialty fiber materials. Understanding of battery applications and appropriate test procedures is an advantage.

  • Familiarity with the operation, software programming, and maintenance of various types of laboratory equipment, especially related to compression/tensile testing and thermal conductivity.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work to tight timescales.

  • Ability to cross-train with others and support coordination of activities for lab technicians

  • Good communication and analytical capabilities.

  • Ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams.

  • Familiarity in working with Microsoft applications.

  • 3-5 years’ experience in technical, manufacturing, and application/process engineering is desired.
