National Archives and Records Administration Archives Technician in Broomfield County, Colorado

Summary This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Archival Operations. This position encompasses the full range of archival support services to include reference, researcher assistance and other customer services, archival processing (including arranging and describing), accessioning, disposal, preserving, digitizing, and reformatting of records. Responsibilities The following are the duties of this position at the GS-07. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position. As an Archives Technician, you will: Provide written or oral "first-line" reference assistance and consultation, respond to all forms of inquiry concerning NARA's archival holdings, in original or surrogate format, by using complex finding aid systems and related archival sources, in both electronic and analog formats. Perform detailed and complex arrangement work following a plan (or guidance) approved by supervisor or team leader. Independently evaluate the physical condition of records in the course of other duties and alerts supervisor or other designated staff to condition problems that limit access or threaten the safety of records. Prepare online catalog descriptions of holdings at all levels according to NARA lifecycle standards, policies, and procedures. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. A one year probationary period may be required. Must successfully complete a background investigation. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S. The work is mostly sedentary; however the incumbent must be physically able to perform the duties of this position. Physical demands may include climbing caster-equipped ladders, maneuvering on catwalks, moving heavy carts of records, and handling boxes of records stored up to 15 feet above the floor and typically weighing 50 pounds, occasionally more. Qualifications You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-06, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: Performing archival or related functions. (Examples may include monitoring researchers, pulling and refiling records, reference, arrangement and description, and/or holdings maintenance); AND Communicating with customers and responding to inquiries, verbally or in writing; AND Using computer systems to locate items and/or using documentation to identify information relevant to a work assignment. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-05 grade level is defined as one year of experience at the GS-04 grade level, or equivalent, that is typically in or related to the position and which equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience for this position is defined as experience: Communicating with customers and responding to inquiries, verbally or in writing; AND Following and referencing archival policy and procedures; AND Filing and/or retrieving records. OR EDUCATION: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school. OR COMBINATION: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.
