FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Medgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of twenty-five colleges within the dynamic City University of New York (CUNY) System. The Department of English at Medgar Evers College invites applicants with experience in Composition and Rhetoric to apply for the position of Lecturer or Doctoral Lecturer, as part of CUNY’s Lecturer Hiring Initiative to improve student success in first-year writing courses, general education courses, and persistence towards degree completion. The primary responsibilities of the full-time Lecturer include teaching composition, acting as faculty mentor for first-year students, developing programs related to composition, and serving on departmental, college, and university committees.

The successful candidate will have expertise in teaching composition and be dedicated to developing a strong composition program and mentoring students. Candidates must have a commitment to the educational mission of Medgar Evers College. Additional years of full- or part-time teaching in higher education and demonstrated success in teaching and working with students from diverse backgrounds will be an advantage. An individual holding a doctoral degree may apply; if hired, candidate will be appointed on the Lecturer/Doctoral Schedule rank.

Appointment to this position will begin in Fall 2024.

QUALIFICATIONS

Lecturer: M.A. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent in Composition and Rhetoric, English, or closely related field; at least two years of successful college composition teaching experience. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Lecturer Doctoral Schedule: Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent in Composition and Rhetoric, English, or closely related field; at least two years of successful college composition teaching experience. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Prefered Qualifications: Demonstrated experience of mentoring students, developing curriculum, working with writing programs or centers, incorporating technology in the teaching of writing, including digital and multimodal literacy, and/or teaching general education courses offered through the Department. The candidate’s pedagogy should be student-centered and informed by current scholarship in composition and rhetoric, or related area. Evidence of ongoing professional development or doctoral study in the field preferred.

COMPENSATION

Salary commesurate with education and experience.

Lecturer: $67,684-$76,870

Lecturer Doctoral Schedule: $72,922-$77,517
