CAMBA Client Advocate, LGBTQ Prevention Navigation 2.0 Program in Brooklyn, New York

CAMBA’s LGBTQ PREVENTION NAVIGATION 2.0 Program provides substance misuse and HIV/hepatitis prevention navigation services to men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender/gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals of color who have sex with men, ages 13 and above, in Brooklyn communities most impacted by the HIV epidemic. These include Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, East New York, and Flatbush/East Flatbush. Outreach staff who identify with the community of focus conduct in-person and online outreach to their peers through dating apps/hook up sites. The Client Advocates recruits clients into a multi-pronged intervention consisting of: sexual health, hepatitis, and substance misuse screening; brief interventions and education sessions; linkage to biomedical and behavioral interventions; and supportive services. The program uses social media campaigns to promote awareness of mental health issues; risk reduction strategies; substance use, hepatitis, and HIV prevention options; and anti-stigma messaging.

What The Client Advocate Does:

  • Prepare marketing materials for the program.

  • Conduct outreach activities at high-risk venues to market the program in order to recruit new clients and re-engage former clients.

  • Follow-up with clients and with referral organizations regarding client contact and progress with referral organization.

  • In collaboration with program staff, work with clients to break through barriers to client goals and to assist clients in advocating for themselves and in moving toward self-sufficiency.

  • Contact clients via telephone, mail and/or face-to-face home and office visits to ensure adherence to program, and document via progress notes.

  • Escort clients to appointments (educational, medical, social service, etc.).

  • Provide all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reports.

  • Create and maintain client files and make copies of all client documents.

  • Conduct pre- and post-intervention assessments of clients’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding HIV risk.

  • Prescreen clients over the telephone for eligibility and may schedule intake appointments.

  • Assist clients in completing all CAMBA intake applications and forms.

  • Schedule appointments for client with referral organizations.

  • Input client data and client progress information into automated database.

  • Contact clients for 30- and 90-day follow-up surveys.

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Sufficient education (English-speaking, -reading, -writing, & math abilities) to comprehend oral and written information and to assist callers and visitors and staff.

  • Two (2) years of relevant experience, preferably in a mid-sized (250+ employees) organization.

  • Good written & verbal communication.

  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Knowledge about, understanding of, and ability to work closely with, persons with HIV/AIDS and related issues.

  • Experience and/or comfort conducting online outreach via social media and dating/”hook-up” apps and websites.

  • Required to work occasional evenings/weekend days

Other Requirements:

  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred, but not required.

Compensation: $43,000 annually

When salary ranges are listed, the range would represent the low and high end for the applicable position & program. The salary offered would be based on various factors unique to each program and candidate. This includes but is not limited to experience, education, budget and/or program size, internal equity, skills and other factors that may be required for the position and organization.

Status: Full-time (35 hours per week)
