The Medtronic Energy and Component Center (MECC) in Brooklyn Center, MN designs, develops, and manufactures the energy components used in implantable devices for a variety of Medtronic businesses. In this exciting role, MECC is looking to hire a Principal Software Systems Engineer to join a growing team designing and developing manufacturing equipment for new product and capacity expansion projects. The Principal SW Systems Engineer performs as a technical lead from the initial design, development, and implementation of software systems that control and optimize our manufacturing equipment (custom-made automated, servo-mechanical, electromechanical, and/or optical manufacturing systems).

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy software systems for manufacturing equipment, ensuring high reliability, scalability, and performance while maintaining compliance with medical device regulations.

  • Integrate software solutions with hardware components, ensuring seamless communication between equipment and software, and enhancing system interoperability.

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including external equipment integrators, equipment engineers, process engineers, quality assurance, and production teams to define system architecture and design requirements.

  • Implement best practices for automated manufacturing equipment software development, including code reviews, testing, and documentation.

  • Troubleshoot and debug issues in production systems and provide timely resolutions.

  • Continuously improve manufacturing equipment software quality, performance, and reliability.

  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends to drive innovation and enhance our products.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

Nice to Have

  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles, design patterns, and best practices.

  • Proficiency with PLC programming and industrial communication protocols (e.g., OPC, Ethernet/IP, Serial).

  • Experience programming languages such as C#, Python, or Java.

  • Strong understanding of software development methodologies (Agile, Scrum) and tools (Git, JIRA).

  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

  • Experience in requirements management, risk management, and system architecture documentation.

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
