The Marine Transportation Department is currently recruiting for a one-semester Visiting Instructor teaching position. Incumbents will teach courses as described below, the needs of the Department, Department Chair, and their background allow.

The incumbent will be assigned courses in the Deck License Program, to potentially include courses in Stability and Cargo Operations, Advanced Firefighting, Lifeboat Operations, License Exam Prep, and RADAR and simulator labs. Knowledge of simulator operations will be helpful and given preference, but not a requirement.

Other potential topics could include Vessel Operations, Seamanship, Rescue Craft, Management and Maritime Regulation, Basic and Advanced Navigation, Ship Handling, Rules of the Road, Stability, Ships Construction, License Preparation, and Simulator Operations as an example, but can include others, as needs of the Department dictate, and their background allows.

  • The experiential education component of some ship and license-related classes will involve teaching outdoors on the pier, onboard the Training Ship, and at the Firefighting field. Candidates should be comfortable teaching in these environments
  • The selected individual will participate in campus and departmental meetings, departmental projects, counseling and advising cadets and holding office hours to provide academic and professional assistance to their students consistent with departmental policies



Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • STCW OPERATIONAL Level License, Unlimited/Oceans, meaning a minimum license level as a THIRD or SECOND MATE on US Flag merchant vessels of any tonnage
  • or if service is not onboard US Flag vessels, must hold, at a minimum, an international equivalent STCW Third or Second Mate Unlimited /Oceans License Credential
  • Current familiarity and experience in the international regulatory environment and SMS

Preferred Qualifications

  • Sailing experience as either Master or Chief Mate
  • Holding a US Credential
  • Holding a bachelor's degree from a maritime academy
  • Holding an advanced degree
  • Prior experience in Maritime education and /or training or familiarization responsibilities, ashore or afloat
  • Holding a current, active US credential

 



Additional Information:

Classification: The Visiting Lecturer will be a non-tenure track, one-semester appointment (August - December 2024). The anticipated salary will be $32,500.00 to $33,500.00 for the contract and includes an outstanding benefits package (for more information, please see the Full-Time UUP Benefits Summary). Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Review of applications will commence immediately and conclude when the position is filled.

An opportunity exists to apply for full-time lecturer's positions as faculty changes occur throughout the year. Additionally, an opportunity exists for this candidate to apply for employment onboard the Training Ship EMPIRE STATE for Summer Sea Term 2025 in various positions within the Deck Department. The positions the candidate might apply for include Deck Training Officer, Watch Officer or Deck Maintenance Officer. Applications will be accepted for either the full cruise or segments as approved by the Master.

Special Notes: Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external searches to occur simultaneously.
