New York Botanical Garden Director for Learning and Development in Bronx, New York

The Director for Learning and Development plays a strategic role in shaping the professional educational landscape for the staff at the New York Botanical Garden. Their focus is on creating the professional development framework and enhancing employee skills and knowledge for a wide array of botanical garden professions that align with the NYBG’s mission, goals, and objectives. They will provide employees with the tools and resources to share the responsibility for growth and career development. This position reports to the Vice President for Human Resources and Chief Diversity Officer and the Associate Vice President

for Employee and Volunteer Engagement and works collaboratively with stakeholders throughout NYBG.

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution. The Director for Learning & Development is a member of the IDEA Senior Advisory Group.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, manage, and evaluate scalable programs that facilitate professional development and continuous learning for NYBG employees in all divisions and across all levels.

  • Lead planning, implementation, and monitoring of institutional Learning and Development budgets, including assessing the cost benefit analysis of each related program.

  • Ensure the equitable and efficient allocation of the enterprise budget for learning and development.

  • In collaboration with department leaders, identify training needs and develop comprehensive learning and development strategies aligned with NYBG’s goals.

  • In collaboration with HR managers, develop and deliver a comprehensive institutional onboarding program and a suite of foundational trainings furthering NYBG’s commitment to belonging and managerial excellence.

  • Facilitate high-impact employee success and leadership development programs using unique learning initiatives including, but not limited to, on- the-job, peer-to-peer, outside resource, and formal learning techniques and programs.

  • Counsel managers and employees on the creation of individual employee

    development plans, goal setting and success criteria, and connecting staff with tools and resources to support their plan.

  • In collaboration with the IDEA Senior Advisory Group, serve as an advisor to management and employees in the implementation of initiatives, events, and programs to advance IDEA objectives.

  • Identify and incorporate effective systems and practices into learning & development to drive diversity and inclusion.

  • Develop and manage agendas for IDEA-related committees and meetings.

  • Develop and maintain a network of external training and development providers.

  • Ensure access to the latest learning resources and methodologies.

  • Learning Management System for delivery, tracking, and reporting of training activities.

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Organizational Development, Human Resources, or Business Administration, or other related area. 3-5 years managerial experience in creating learning & development framework and implementation.

  • Knowledge of botanical garden, horticulture, botanical science, or other green industry professional development.

  • Ability to evaluate enterprise learning and development from multiple perspectives with the goal of broadly supporting IDEA initiatives and NYBG’s mission.

  • Ability to work in a variety of circumstances, including autonomously, high collaboration with internal and external partners, facilitating meetings, education programs, and workshops.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills required with a demonstrated ability to motivate people.

  • Excellent time management, writing, project management, and communication skills.

  • Excellent negotiation and change management skills.

  • Facilitating mentorship programs and employee resource groups highly desired.

    Physical Demands & Work Environment:

    While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, sit or stand for desk and group facilitation. This employee must be able to move up to 25 pounds of materials or equipment.

    Baseline Work Schedule:

    Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

    Salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $88,000 - $110,000.
