Minimum Qualifications Admission to the New York State Bar and a member in good standing with three (3) years post-bar prosecutorial experience. Commitment to public service and excellent research/writing skills are essential. NYS residency required.

Duties Description Reporting directly to Counsel in the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) of the New York State Division of Human Rights (DHR), the Assistant Counsel will primarily assist DHR’s Housing Investigations Unit (HIU). Duties include, but are not limited to:• Analyzes legal issues, develops legal strategy with the Director and Assistant Director of HIU, and supervises the implementation of legal strategies;• Provides legal support and guidance on threshold intake questions, complaint filings, and investigations;• Supports with conciliation between parties before HIU, including but not limited to mediation efforts, conciliation agreement drafts, compliance monitoring, and enforcement following non-compliance; • Remains up-to-date on the latest developments of state and federal cases that impact the Human Right Law; • Assists with State and Federal reporting requirements; • Ensures compliance with the NYS CPLR, Court Rules, HUD regulations, and established policies and practices of the Division;• Reviews and processes parties’ reasonable accommodation requests; • Reviews investigation reports and determinations prior to hearings;• Fosters and encourages teamwork and communication, reinforces and maintains staff accountability, and provides assistance as needed;• Responds to parties’ concerns if needed;• Coordinates staff trainings with the Director of Training to enhance skills and update legal knowledge; • Provides internal and external trainings and guidance on changes in fair housing and landlord-tenant laws;• Prepares and submits necessary grant reports; and • Such other duties as may be required or assigned.
