Brockton Hospital Lactation Consultant – Certified, Registered Nurse in Brockton, Massachusetts

Position Summary:

In collaboration with the nurse manager and lactation resource nurses, assumes responsibilities for the planning and development of the in and outpatient Lactation Management Service. Assumes responsibility for information management and dissemination to patients and medical/nursing personnel. Applies new knowledge for the provision of direct patient care for the nursing staff and other health disciplines.

This is a full-time 40 hour/ week position

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the development of policies, criteria and standards relative to the breastfeeding family along with the appropriate management of their lactation needs.

  • Acts as consultant, educator, and participative role model to medical and nursing staff involved in the planning, guiding, implementing, and evaluating nursing practice for the breastfeeding family.

  • Reviews, upgrades/improves, and evaluates breastfeeding literature, products, and equipment

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care providers to identify and achieve desired health care goals/outcomes of the breastfeeding family.

  • Organizes, implements, and promotes clinical conferences and educational programs for nursing staff, students, interdisciplinary health care providers and the public on lactation care and management.

  • Meets and maintains eligibility requirement for certification by the professional organization (IBCLC).

  • Participates on hospital, nursing division, external professional and public committees for the improvement and advancement of breastfeeding care, education, and support of lactating families.

  • Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding classes.

  • Establishes, conducts, and evaluates outpatient lactation clinic.

  • Rounds on breastfeeding mothers and high risk mother/baby couplet during hospitalization to reinforce and augment teaching provided by nursing staff.

  • Evaluates the lactation management program/services through quality improvement studies.

  • Orients new obstetric personnel on department lactation services, standards and policies.

  • Maintains confidentiality of hospital and patient information verbal, written, and system.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

  • Functions independently within established department and division policies and goals.

    BASIC KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/APTITUDE/EXPERIENCE:

  • One to two years experience in lactation consultation required.

  • Supervisory and/or teaching experience with demonstrated interpersonal skills, clinical expertise and professional creativity required.

  • Must be a licensed Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Must be able to reasonably make appropriate judgment in communications and actions with patients, physicians, other associates, outside agencies, and vendors.

    Education/Experience/Licenses/Technical/Other:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Certification by the International Board Certification in Lactation Consulting (IBCLC) is required.

  • Experience (Type & Length): One to two years’ experience in lactation consultation required. Supervisory and/or teaching experience with demonstrated interpersonal skills, clinical expertise and professional creativity required.

  • Certification/Licensure: Must be a licensed Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
