Job Summary:

Position Summary:

The Highway Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy highway equipment for digs, concrete flat work, sidewalk removal and replacement and more. This position is also responsible for all CDL driving, all backhoe work, and for turning the compost pile daily. This position is also utilized by all construction crews, for construction debris removal. Further duties of this position includes performing inspections and routine maintenance on various equipment including trucks, forklifts, skid loaders, front end loaders, tractors, mowers, backhoes and sweepers.

Essential Functions:

  • Operates CDL and highway equipment.

  • Inspects loaders and snowplows.

  • Takes plow truck to town buildings – using loaders to fill trucks with salt.

  • Checks all roadways on campus

  • Operates graders for leveling and operates tractors to load materials such as dirt and rocks.

  • Operates forklifts and dump trucks to transport trash and materials.

  • Operates various equipment for general site preparation, landscaping, snow removal, and related assignments.

  • Operate diesel and gas tractors, with backhoe, loader, and other attachments to perform various jobs, such as: digging trenches for electrical and sewer and water lines, grading and leveling, shrub and tree removal, loading/unloading trucks, digging postholes and drainage holes, miscellaneous lawn care operations.

  • Removes materials preparatory to repair and construction by using jackhammers, sanders, paint stripers, and other hand tools and equipment.

  • Performs routine inspection on vehicles such as checking oil, lubrication, fluids, lights, belts and tires.

  • Washes machines and equipment.

  • Mounts and dismounts major assemblies, such as plows and salt spreaders, and assists mechanics in removing and installing heavy items, such as engines and transmissions.

  • Assists in mechanical repairs of grounds equipment.

  • Manual labor work such as: installing fences, sweeping, shoveling, setting up equipment, etc.

    Supervision:

  • Guides and trains student employees, performing related work; as appropriate to the area of operation.

  • Supervises Grounds Workers or Laborers, as assigned.

Operating Needs:

  • NYS Pesticide Certified within 6 months in title.

  • Possession of a valid NY driver’s license is a requirement for this job (CDL, class B) and must maintain.

  • Flexible schedule, including evening, weekends, and holidays

Working Environment:

  • May be subject to exposure to outside elements of working with hazardous materials, schedule changes based on needs of the College, long hours to complete/perform scheduled or emergency functions/projects.

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires lifting objects up to 50 pounds.

  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, and/or loud noises.

    Minimum Qualifications:

One year of experience in the operation of tractors or other self-propelled equipment and possession of a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle operated (CDL, Class B).

Preferred Qualifications: Possesses good knowledge of the operation of a variety of self-propelled equipment.

Possesses a working knowledge of dig safety standards.

Work Schedule: 40 hours/week 6:00 am-2:30 pm

Salary and Benefits:

$37,121.
