Job Summary
This role will be to provide skilled Cast Tech support and work collaboratively with other members of the CMC Team, including physicians and all clinical staff.

Responsibilities*
CASTING/SPLINTING
Independent application of casts of various materials and assist providers in the application of complex casts
Make appropriate adjustments to casts as instructed from provider
Remove casts and prepare patients for recasting by inspecting, assessing and cleansing skin
Assess patient progress after cast application by checking circulation and comfort
Knowledge of appropriate casting techniques for providers on angles, lengths and thickness of casts when being placed on Pediatric patients
Knowledge on removal of Mehta casts and hip spica and placement of clubfoot casting
Waterproof cast placement on appropriate fractures
Appropriate billing and documentation of waterproof casts
BRACING
Fitting off the shelf durable medical equipment
Measuring and adjustments for all braces
Proper documentation and billing for all braces
Assessing patient for proper brace placement
BILLING
Enter billing for all casts/braces/splints placed
Proper documentation in MiChart for casting and bracing
Maintain cast log and reconcile monthly to make sure all casts/braces/splints have been billed
Identify patients that will require insurance pre-auths
PATIENT INSTRUCTION/ STAFF TRAINING
Instruct and advise patients on the use and care of casts and appropriate activities while in a cast
Provide training of cast and brace application and removal to MA staff
Provide training for billing of casts and braces
Provide home exercise programs for patients to bridge gap while awaiting appointment with physical therapy
Contact for all issues that arise for casting and bracing
Maintain all providers protocols/preferences for casting and bracing
CLINIC PROCEDURES
Set up and support in-clinic procedures
Participate in the placement and removal of Orthopaedic pins
Proper transport and disposal of items for sterilization
Prepare patients for and assist in reduction of fractures if required
Treatment of sterile and infected wounds including cleansing and draining wound dressing
UNIT LIAISON
Doctor to staff liaison for appropriate patient care and cast placement
Liaison coordinator for off-site Ortho facilities and cast rooms
Liaison to Orthotics & Prosthetics for bracing supplies, including stocking and billing of products used in the unit
Patient to provider liaison for any issues that arise with cast/braces
Liaison with Nursing staff for add-on patients to Cast Room, following appropriate triage
CAST ROOM SUPPLY MAINTENANCE
Stock and maintain equipment and supplies for use in the Cast Rooms
Order all materials and maintain inventory needed for the Cast Rooms
CONTROL
Perform scheduled infection control maintenance of patient care items and equipment
Perform expired audits on all items in the Cast Rooms
JCAHO - maintain Cast Rooms so they are continually prepared for JCAHO surveyors
Required Qualifications*
Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Progressively responsible experience in the application of casts and wound treatment
Considerable knowledge of casting materials
Experience in cast and splint placement
Strong background in anatomy and physiology
Strong background in Orthopaedic sports injuries
Strong background working with Pediatric patients
Individual that can independently treat and bill patients
Desired Qualifications*
Previous Orthopaedic clinical operations and emergency services experience is helpful.
Previous experience working with MiChart/Epic /Cadence, as well as knowledge of University policies and procedures is helpful.
Casting Certification
Orthotic Fitter Certification
Individual that has a strong background in anatomy and physiology
Strong background in Orthopaedic sports injuries
Strong background working with Pediatric patients
Individual that can independently treat and bill patients
Experience in adult and pediatric cast/brace placement
Work Schedule
8:00 am – 5:00 pm (may vary dependent upon clinical needs)
Monday – Friday (with the exception of meetings or coverage when necessary. We utilize flex scheduling to off-set hours worked in excess of 8 in any one day)

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
