Job Summary

Responsible to the assisting with activities and programs that contribute to improving nuclear safety, reliability, and efficiency of plant operations – including Corrective Action Program and Maintenance Rule Program.

Job Description

  • Conduct activities associated with Performance Improvement Programs for Engineering – including accurate navigation of Corrective Action Program Software, meeting coordination, program monitoring/trending, and procedure reviews.

  • Complete all types of corrective action program assignments – including higher level evaluations (cause, common cause, IER Level 1 and 2 evaluations, effectiveness reviews), as qualified.

  • Lead or participate on self-assessments, benchmarking activities, and the development of training, as qualified.

  • Maintain knowledge of current industry trends in performance improvement and maintenance rule through networking activities, participation on conference calls, industry meetings, and assessments at other stations.

  • Maintain and adjust performance indicators and other information reports that are visible on a department/station level.

  • Provide input and comment to maintain program procedures to high standards and current with the industry.

  • Ensure adherence to requirements of 10CFR50.65 Monitoring the Effectiveness of Maintenance at Nuclear Power Plants; and guidance in NUMARC 93-01, Guidelines for Measuring the Effectiveness of Maintenance at Nuclear Power Plants.

  • Maintain and adjust performance indicators and other information reports that are visible on a department/station level, with adherence to requirements of NUREG 1649, Reactor Oversight Process, and NEI 99-02, Regulatory Assessment Performance Indicator Guideline.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR NUCLEAR ENGINEER:

  • Has typically acquired 2 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET,Individuals with a Master's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.

  • *ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Acceptable alternatives are:

  • (1) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or

  • (2) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR NUCLEAR ENGINEER (UPPER MID-LEVEL)

  • Has typically acquired 4 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET* or 2 years of related engineering experience along with a Master’s degree in engineering from a program accredited by ABET* Individuals with a PhD in engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET* may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is encouraged and preferred.

  • *ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Acceptable alternatives are:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master’s degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program. ** Confirmation is required to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR NUCLEAR ENGINEER, SR:

  • Has typically acquired 6 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited ABET* OR 4 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*

  • Registration as a PE in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico* is encouraged and preferred.

  • *ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Acceptable alternatives are (1) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET), plus a PE license in any state of the U.S. or (2) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physical demand level is Sedentary, and requirement detail are listed below:

  • May perform walkdowns in plant environment which may include exposure to heat, cold, noise, and radiation exposure.

  • Maintain knowledge of current industry trends

  • Travel may be required

  • Effective writing and verbal communications: : develops, reviews or prepares reports on complex technical subjects clearly, concisely and effectively, in a manner suitable for presentation to management and professional societies regulatory bodies, etc.; leads and facilitates meetings effectively.

  • Strong interpersonal skills: functions as a team leader and member; networks upward and downward in several disciplines inside and outside the AEP system; leverages network to get things done.

  • High attention to detail

  • Decision making: uses diverse approaches to make decisions in the absence of a definite framework or where few precedents exist; can handle conflicting interests related to approaches on projects or studies; analyzes options and risks; decisions affect the operations or results of the department and may have some impact on a major project.

  • Problem solving and initiative: identifies, clarifies, resolves, and initiates solutions to routine problems that sometimes involve analysis of inadequate or conflicting data; demonstrates the ability to divide problems into component steps.

Salary range is from minimum to mid-point.

Nuclear Engineer, Upper Mid-level (SG 07): $83,413 - $104,268

Nuclear Engineer, Sr. (SG 08): $94,225 - $122,419

Nuclear Engineer, Princ. (SG 09): $110,656 - $143,853

Must establish & maintain a permanent residence within a 45-minute safe drive time to the D.C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant.
