Job Description: Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Company in Brewster, OH, is hiring for multiple full-time Locomotive Technician Apprentices openings.
Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Company provides freight transportation service for many companies in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. W&LE handles over 135,000 carloads per year. The company is private, 100% internally owned and currently has over 430 employees. W&LE is the largest Ohio-based railroad and is among the largest regional railroads in the country. The company has over 120 customers and a continually growing customer base. W&LE interchanges in numerous locations with three major Class I railroads (Canadian National, CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern), as well as 14 regional and shortline railroads.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Maintenance, repair, inspection, test, overhaul, reconditioning, restructuring, machining, rebuilding, either in the shop, or in the field, of the locomotives, their components and systems; the performance of all federal inspections, and all repairs resulting from such inspections, all service work in the Brewster repair and service area including but not limited to sanding, fueling, light repair and supplying of locomotives; service work beyond the Brewster repair area, including light repair and supplying locomotives where light repair is undertaken
- All hostler work, for example, the running and switching of locomotives in the Brewster repair or service areas; and all work generally recognized as electrical work, mechanical and/or machine work, sheet metal work and blacksmith work associated with locomotive repair and servicing
Working Conditions:
- Work safely at all times in compliance with all safety and operating rules
- Irregular work hours which may include overtime (employees must be able to work any shift, any day of the week)
- Complete required training/apprenticeship
- Employees work in the shop and outdoors in all weather conditions
- Employees work in confined spaces and at or above elevated heights
- Heavy work, lifting up to 85 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally
- Stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, balance, climb, twist, work overhead, reach, walking on uneven surfaces, standing on hard surfaces for long periods
Wages:
- * Apprentice 1: \$21.23
- ** Apprentice 2: \$21.97
- Technician: \$25.08
- * Apprentice 1: are in first year of training
- ** Apprentice 2: are employees halfway through Locomotive Technician Apprentice training program
Training/Apprenticeship:
- Company paid on-the-job training/apprenticeship
- All locomotive employees are subject to Locomotive Technician Apprenticeship training program
Shift/Hours:
- Full time (40 hours/week)
- Shift/hours subject to seniority
- Assigned to one of two 8-hour shifts
- Available to work any shift required
Probationary Period:
- 90 days
- Employees must complete apprenticeship program in accordance with the provisions of the labor agreement
